Hairy armpits are perceived as an ‘Ong’ factor in China and many Asian countries. To me, it’s unhygienic and a huge turn off. But hairy crabs excite me. Very much. It is also rather expensive, so I rarely get to indulge in such a treat.
Elegant Inn’s hairy crab promotion – RM138++ for a 6-course meal including fish maw, hairy crab, fish and prawn – sounded like a steal. I started with the twin cake platter, a palate teaser of meat patty with salted fish accents and deep fried eggplant with drizzles of savory-sweet sauce.
As soon as I polished my plate, the waiter brought in the double boiled chicken soup with porcini mushroom, fish maw and conch. The Chinese in me enjoyed this richly flavour soup. What’s not to like about porcini mushroom and fish maw?
The hairy crab was food porn. Nice to look at, and even nicer to experience. The roe was plenty and insanely delicious. Rich and gloriously creamy, I took my time to savour the experience. The flesh of the crab was sweet, but less exciting next to the roe.
I rather enjoyed the fried estuary garoupa with prawn in soy glaze. The smooth flesh of the fish was contrasted with the succulent prawn. It was a good pair of taste and texture.
Elegant Inn’s lotus leaf rice was very tasty, topped with diced chicken and abalone sauce. Some might find the rice a tad too moist, but I actually like it that way.
Dessert was a duo of double boiled hasma with snow pear and snow fungus, and nutty twin sesame ball. The latter was crisp on the outside with a generous amount of filling. Vainpots will love the hasma with snow pear and snow fungus. I was told hasma gives ladies a good complexion.
All in, I was pleased with my dinner. The dishes were delicious in their own way and I thought it was money well spent. Of course, I won’t be eating this every single week, unless someone treats me. The hairy crab promotion is available till mid December so chop chop!

Hahahaha…I’ll make sure I order extra. ๐
If I’m not mistaken, I read there are ‘fake’ hairy crabs as well, coming from China.
Yeah, heard about that.
I don’t think Elegant Inn will serve fake hairy crabs though. The owner is very particular about her food quality. ๐
gosh, i’ve not had my dose of hairy crab yet this year. this looks like a very reasonably priced set ๐
Yes, I’m glad the meal didn’t make me feel poorer. Instead, I was in roe heaven. ๐
