A follower recommended that I tried Fatt Gor Hor Fun & Chicken Rice in Ipoh – but he send me an article written in Chinese and Google translate didn’t do a good job in translating the name of the stall and also the address, which wasn’t properly listed in the article.
It took me more than 40 minutes of deciphering the “Chinese to English” code and narrowing down the location to 188 Food Centre, not too far away from Ipoh Parade. The translation stated, “two yuan market” and “Ipoh baili mall”, which was hardly any clue. Still, I managed to locate Fatt Gor Ipoh Hor Fun & Chicken Rice, and it’s a gem.
The stall is managed by Fatt Gor and his wife, along with a younger lady who later shared with me that she will be taking over from Fatt Gor when he retires. Like its name suggests, Fatt Gor Ipoh Hor Fun & Chicken Rice serves hor fun soup and poached chicken with beansprouts and it’s one of the better ones I’ve eaten in Ipoh.
Since it took me so long to locate this stall, I decided to go all out and ordered a whole chicken with a plate of Ipoh beansprouts, plus four bowls of hor fun for ourselves and the little ones. Our helper had a plate of rice, cooked in chicken stock and oil.
Fatt Gor Ipoh Hor Fun & Chicken Rice uses a unique sauce base for the poached chicken (RM50 – whole, RM25 – half). It’s light yet savoury with hint of sweetness and roasted scallion oil aroma. I like that the chicken is cooked just right and the fat is jelly-like, which adds flavour to the smooth chicken flesh.
For the uninitiated, the poached chicken is served lukewarm, which I was told is how they serve it in Ipoh. I would say the poached chicken at Fatt Gor Ipoh Hor Fun & Chicken Rice is better than many places in Ipoh, falling just shortly behind Cowan Street’s chicken. Given how difficult it is to eat at the latter, I would pick Fatt Gor Ipoh Hor Fun & Chicken Rice anytime.
The plain hor fun (RM2 per bowl) is smooth and the broth is delicious – made using chicken stock and prawn head. That said, I would have liked it to be richer if I were to eat just the kai si hor fun. But with the poached chicken, the hor fun was rightly balanced.
I also like the beansprouts (RM2 – small, RM4 – medium, RM6 – large) at Fatt Gor Ipoh Hor Fun & Chicken Rice; short, fat and crunchy. Definitely worth the visit and stomach space. I was told the stall will be taken over by the younger lady soon and my visit was in early last month (June 2024).
Hopefully, she’s able to maintain the standards of Fatt Gor Ipoh Hor Fun & Chicken Rice as it really is a gem of a place if you’re a fan of Ipoh hor fun and poached chicken.
