Outdark, SS15 Subang Jaya

by Bangsar Babe

Outdark in SS15 Subang Jaya is said to serve the best Korean fried chicken in Klang Valley at the moment – a claim made by my friend who loves fried chicken just as much as I do. Such a statement needed validation which prompted me to pay Outdark a visit.

Lighting isn’t great for photos here. I guess that’s their dining concept.

Service was fairly quick though I felt the staff didn’t know enough to make proper recommendations. We went for the signature – Outdark’s boneless fried chicken (RM49) with a pairing of four sauces (honey-garlic, ganjang soy, spicy and sweet-spicy). Portion runs slightly on the small side so a platter like this can barely feed two adults, I feel.

You get four accompanying sauces to pair with your original fried chicken

Tastewise, the chicken was good. I liked this better than the ones from Chicken Up down the road and also Chicken House in Solaris Mont Kiara. The batter was crisp and light, and well-seasoned with salt and spices. I particularly liked this with sweet-spicy sauce as it gives the chicken a good kick without burning up the palate.

Seafood Pancake

We also shared a portion of Cheese Kingdom (RM79) and seafood pancake (RM28) – the latter was crisp around the sides but chewy at the centre. I like my Korean pancakes this way as the chewy, fluffy centre reminds me of a pancake rather than the ones fried till crispy all over. Seafood portion was generous so you get bits of them in each bite of pancake.

I really don’t get the Cheese Kingdom hype though I still ordered it to complete the overall review. Yes, the things I’d do (and pay for) when it comes to food writing – you’re welcome by the way. This “kingdom” comes with fried chicken coated in spicy bean paste gravy, mozzarella cheese, topokki, seaweed rice, pineapple slices and a side of chopped kimchi.

Chicken covered with melted cheese

You basically take a piece of chicken and wrap it with strings of melted mozzarella (see picture for better understanding) and eat. I liked the chicken and the sauce but felt the cheese did nothing in enhancing the flavour of the meat. It’s gimmicky and to a certain extent, cloying if you were constantly wrap your chicken with cheese. I stopped the cheese after my second piece of chicken.

Our bill came up to about RM180 for the above. Not cheap if you asked me. I wouldn’t mind coming back for the pancake and fried chicken (because it is the best I’ve eaten at the moment) but definitely not the Cheese Kingdom.

Ambiance: 6/10
Price: 5.5/10
Food: 6.5/10 (pork-free)
Verdict: The fried chicken is good. Skip the Cheese Kingdom unless you’re one of those who’s into “everything with cheese”.

Hi…it’s been a while. I too love their seafood pancake and their honey garlic fried chicken with the three type of fries on a recent visit. =)
