Ngam, Bangsar

by Bangsar Babe

There was no air of pretense at Ngam in Bangsar when I stepped in for a casual dinner session last week. The setup is basic, almost no frills, and the menu is straightforward and honest.

Creamy tomyum noodles

I will admit though, the decor played no part in my interest towards Ngam. It was their creamy tomyum noodles (or more like the images of them), deliciously circulating on Instagram that did. The noodles (RM13.90) come served in coloured bowls with matching spoons, representing the colours of Ngam.

The soup is relatively thick and spicy, with a creamy sweetness from the coconut milk and prawn stock. I like that the noodles were cooked just right so they had a toothsome texture and stayed firm till my last mouthful.

Fried chicken wings

I liked the fried chicken wings (RM7.90), seasoned with lemongrass for a sharper flavour and aroma. My only gripe was the size of the wings, which turned out rather tiny after trying. The Thai fish cakes (RM7.90) was quite decent, though I wished they were thicker and more succulent.

Thai basil minced chicken rice with egg

I enjoyed the Thai basil minced beef with rice (RM13.90) which came with a sunny side up. The meat was well seasoned and sweet from the basil. It was tasty with rice, and runny yolk. I reckon it’s also a more filling alternative to the tomyum noodles — the latter is of a smaller portion.

Ngam serves good tub tim krob (RM6.90) but they need to work on serving it with crushed ice. That said, the red ruby has a good balance of crunch and chewiness so I wouldn’t mind having this again.

Thai iced green tea

Both the Thai iced tea and Thai iced green tea was good, the latter was stronger in taste and more aromatic in general. Prices are fair, though I feel portions are smallish for a big eater like me.

Ambiance: 6/10
Price: 6/10
Food: 6/10 (pork free)
Verdict: Ngam serves pretty decent food and prices are somewhat fair. Portions however can be worked on, I feel. :)
