My father in-law frequents the F&B establishments at APW quite regularly with his group of friends and seems more up to date with the food scene than I am. Proof Pizza + Wine at APW has been on Jien’s to-try list for quite some time, but I wasn’t as keen because my father in-law told it he found it “just alright”.
The place is packed by nature – filled with people tucking into slices of pizza between sips of wine. It’s best to get there early or past dinner time as the queue can take up to 30 minutes during peak hours. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the service (some say it’s good while others find it disappointing) but I was fortunate to receive pleasant service.
Proof Pizza + Wine uses a woodfire oven when making their pizzas, and the Umbrian Black Truffle Pizza (RM37 – 8 inch, RM55 – 12 inch) is a crowd favourite. The pizza base was crusty with a slight chew in each bite. I found it a tad thicker than what I’d like, but the toppings of black truffle paste, mixed mushrooms and taleggio was rich with an earthy undertone.
The Luganega Pork Sausage Pizza (RM33 – 8 inch, RM50 – 12 inch) featured crumbed cauliflower, slices of pork sausage, egg, yoghurt and feta cheese. This had a lot of Greek elements – you get that peppery aftertaste from the pesto and the yogurt offsets the strong flavours of the sausage and cheese. That said, I found the pizza dough a tad thick, so I didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have.
Dessert was a Green Apple Rocky Road Pizza (RM20) which tasted like a cross of s’mores and apple pie, but on a pizza base. I didn’t care much for this as I found the overall combination too sweet. If you like s’mores in general, you might have a different opinion about this dessert.
The wine selection is moderate but sufficient. I liked that they carried a good range of Spanish and Argentinian wines which I enjoy. Prices aren’t insanely expensive (our bill came up to slightly over RM300 inclusive of a bottle of wine) but just like my father in-law, I felt the pizzas were overrated.
Jien however found the experience to be pleasant so I guess we’ll still be going back. Marriages are afterall, a give and take. 😉
