The Mandarin Cake Shop in Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur

“Your sloppy boyfriend gives you cupcakes. Your lover gives you macarons.”

When I had my first macaron in Paris 5 years ago, I didn’t like it. Not because it wasn’t good – it was better than most macarons I’ve had in KL – but because I didn’t understand the appeal of this dainty treat. Now I do. A macaron isn’t meant to be tucked into. It is there to tease and leave you longing for more. Almost like an encounter with a Casanova.

Sitting pretty in a gift box

The macarons from The Mandarin Cake Shop did just that – tease. So small, yet so much pleasure in one bite. The crust crumbles, giving way to a chewy and moist interior. However, I think the surprise element lies in the filling. Chocolate, lavender, vanilla, butterscotch, caramel, rose, lemon, passionfruit…the possibilities are endless.

l-r: Blackberry, hazelnut, strawberry and orange

I sampled the hazelnut, orange, blackberry, calamansi, strawberry, chocolate and butterscotch macaron and found them pretty good. Of the lot, the calamansi and hazelnut left quite an impression. The former was an ideal combination of sweet and sour, while the hazelnut was rich and with a delicately nutty flavour.

I like how the macarons aren’t artificially sweet as atural ingredients are used to give them flavour. These treats cost RM5 per piece and comes in a beautiful gift box should you opt for takeaway.

The hazelnut flavour is my favourite 😉 I have to say MO’s macarons are one of the best in KL I’ve tasted.

This is my favourite dessert place in the city. Love the macaroons, but the cheesecake and chocolates are amazing too.
