UK Loh, Kuantan

A local said I need to pay a visit to UK Loh when I’m in Kuantan, known for its roast meats especially duck and pork. It’s popular among locals and tourists alike, so the place gets crowded during peak hours.

Cosy ambiance

We were there for a late lunch on a weekday and still needed to wait for a table to be vacant. Since the girls and our helper were hungry, we ordered quite a bit – ¼ roast duck, char siew, siew yuk, prawn wantan soup, steamed chicken with rice (RM8) and wantan noodles.

1/4 Roast Duck

I wanted a larger portion of duck but they already ran out for the day, so we were left with just the ¼ option (RM18). The duck was frankly, just alright in my opinion. It’s better than the average roast duck served at coffeeshop stalls but I’ve had better ones in KL.

UK Loh’s version is moderately juicy and the skin is crisp, but the seasoning isn’t as robust as I like it to be; you can still taste the gaminess of the duck. If you’re a fan of duck flavour, then you’d enjoy UK Loh’s duck more than I did. I prefer a stronger herbal note when it comes to roast duck. Either that, or a fattier duck so it’s (usually) less gamey.

Char Siew

Siew Yuk

The char siew (RM10) is quite decent – tender yet nicely charred around the edges. I also like their fat to meat ratio so there’s a meaty bite and also that melt-in-the-mouth texture from the rendered fat. We didn’t enjoy the siew yuk as much since the cut wasn’t good. The edges were dry and stringy, which didn’t do justice to the crispy skin. A pity, as UK Loh’s siew yuk (RM10) comes recommended on Google reviews.

Wantan Soup

They are quite generous with the wantan filling (RM7.50), so each bite was meaty and satisfying. The kids enjoyed this a lot and helped themselves to two whole dumplings each. UK Loh offers rice or wantan noodles as the carb option for their roast meats – we ordered the latter (RM4.50).

Wantan Noodles

The noodles were ok though quite clumsily plated. Tastewise, I would have preferred it springier and the dark sauce seasoning could use more aromatics – pork lard oil – to elevate flavour. Still, I won’t complain too much since it served its purpose; an accompaniment to the roast meats we ordered.

Ambiance is comfortable and I find it quite kids-friendly, which is a plus point when you’re eating out with little ones. Service is quick and food didn’t take long to arrive, plus pricing is affordable so I’d still return to UK Loh on our next trip to Kuantan.
