Meng Kee Char Siew, Kuchai Lama

by Bangsar Babe

After a rather disappointing char siew experience at Meng Kee Char Siew in Happy Garden, I decided to give the branch in Kuchai Lama a shot. Which was a let-down as well. Service was prompt and our food didn’t take long to arrive.

Char siew wantan mee

We ordered the usual – char siew wantan mee (RM5.50 – small, RM6.50 – large), prawn wantan chicken hor fun (RM5.50), pork sausage (RM6) and a portion of fried sui kow (RM6). I thought the chicken hor fun was alright. The broth had a sweeter flavour and the chicken slivers were still juicy. That said, I suspect it might be the MSG talking as I felt a bit thirsty after the meal.

Pork Sausage

The pork sausage was disappointing; it was too sweet and barely porky. They must have gone overboard with the seasoning, hence the outcome. While I had no issue with the wantan mee, the char siew wasn’t up to par. It didn’t have that melt-in-the-mouth texture and the char was missing.

Prawn wantan

Fried sui kow was alright – nicely crisp on the outside and the centre, juicy. They were quite generous with the filling, but again, this wasn’t a highlight.

Fried Sui Kow

Our bill came up to about RM27 for the above, inclusive of two drinks. Not expensive but the food was average. Especially since they used the title “Meng Kee Char Siew”.

Ambiance: 5.5/10
Price: 6/10
Food: 5/10 (non halal)
Verdict: The chicken hor fun was decent. But if you’re coming here just for the char siew, you will be disappointed.
