Fashion How-To: Plaid Please – Women

I’m the kind of person that whenever I see a plaid print I kinda go, “Oooooooo! Lookit at that gorgeous plaid!” And I can’t resist but walk over to check it out, and more often than not, end up walking away with a piece! #shopaholic

Because of the variety of colours & prints available in plaid, styling it up can be a little tricky for some, and while I don’t really subscribe to any fashion rules, here are just a few helpful hints to get you started on styling up your plaid shirt.

Here are 3 different looks for 3 different occasions using one red & blue plaid shirt. 🙂

Let’s get started!

#1 For the office

Plaid Office

Top, Skirt, Necklace: Peep Boutique, Snake Print Pumps: Zalora

As the plaid shirt featured has blue, red & white elements to it, I like to create a look centered on that colour palette as it creates a pulled together look. If the plaid top you have is cropped, opt to tie it at the waist to bring in your silhouette and let the flared midi skirt do its job in creating an hourglass illusion. For a longer plaid top, tuck in your shirt for a preppy and clean finish.

The added monochrome necklace adds a touch of elegance to the otherwise casual plaid crop top.

Pair up this look with a pair of pointy monochromatic snake print pumps for a touch of edginess that goes well with the black & white necklace.

To rock this look with a bag, I recommend either a black, white or nude oversized bag. The neutral bag brings the entire look together without clutter and its size will ensure you have all your important documents with you.

#2 For a downtown vibe

Downtown vibe

Top: Peep Boutique, Lace Bralette: BlaqMagikLvrs, Pleather Culottes: Asos, Clutch: Oh Temptations

When dressing up your plaid shirt, go for larger neutral pieces with smaller pops of colour. Seen here the red & blue plaid shirt is paired up with a mix of black texture in a lace bralette with a pair of pleather culottes (larger pieces).

To keep this look from looking too black-centric, I paired it up with a pop of colour at the feet with a solid red pair of wedges and a bright blue clutch (smaller pops of colour).

For this look, feel free to tie the top at the waist of leave it billowing loosely in the wind.

Mixing textures brings more interest & dimension to your outfits

The bright blue clutch brings out the navy in the plaid shirt, creating a uniform appeal.

#3 For the casual weekend

Casual Weekend

Plaid Top, Crop Top, Necklace, Shorts: Peep Boutique, Platform Loafers: BlaqMagikLvrs, Bag: Oh Temptations

Casual Weekend 2

If your high-waisted shorts don’t fit perfectly at the waist, a neatly tied shirt around the waist works perfectly as a belt.

Ah, the classic 90’s tied at the waist shirt. In this look, I kept things really casual with a cotton off-shoulder crop top & distressed high-waisted denim shorts. The shredded shorts added the mix of texture this look needs while the gold necklace brings the eye to the collarbone and adds a hint of colour. Finish off the look with a pair of platform loafers & pleather backpack. A perfect look for school & the weekend!

Casual Weekend 3

Keeping your palette simple with black & white brings focus to the details & colours in the plaid prints.

When it comes to picking up a plaid shirt for yourself, just go towards colours & prints that you gravitate to and love! As it doesn’t matter what kinda prints, colours or design your plaid shirt comes in, as long as you follow these helpful tips above you’ll be able to style up any plaid shirt!

While I kept these 3 looks simple with using mostly black, you may opt to change it up for shades of nude & white.

There you have it…3 different looks with 1 simple plaid shirt. Tell us, which of these looks are your favourite? 🙂
