Nasi Kandar is one of the simple pleasures I enjoy on a leisurely weekend and both Jien and I are always on a lookout for good ones in Klang Valley. A friend told us Nasi Kandar Utara in SS15 Subang isn’t too bad so we decided to pay them a visit to see if it’s worth hyping about.
The shop is pretty unassuming – like your typical mamak restaurant but with a display of nasi kandar dishes out front. Like most nasi kandar shops, you tell the staff what items you’d like on your plate and he will mix up the gravies for you. I like my rice really drenched in curries so if you’re like me, remember to ask him to “banjir nasi”.
I opted for squid, fried chicken, fried bittergourd and mixed vegetables on my rice. The squid here is quite good and your rice would taste better if you ask for squid curry to be added into the gravy mix.
I usually go for ayam kicap when eating nasi kandar, but they only had ayam goreng that afternoon, hence my pick. Fish egg is also available if you want to indulge though by the time I wanted to consider it, I had literally no space left on my plate. Yes, I’m that greedy when it comes to nasi kandar! 😛
The curries were decent though not particularly mind-blowing. While the guy was generous with the mixing, I found the curries lacking in depth and sweetness, despite being rich. ’s curries are better, in my opinion.
Our friend opted for the fried chicken, daging masak kicap and telur dadar. The beef was tender enough but it lacked flavour from the gravy. Telur dadar wasn’t much to shout about either but my friend didn’t like that they added a lot of turmeric into the egg mix. He claimed it “bastardised” the dish.
The bill came up to RM43 for the above, inclusive of two drinks. Given what we took, pricing seemed reasonable though I feel food was just slightly above average.
Ambiance: 5.5/10
Price: 6.5/10
Food: 6/10 (halal)
Verdict: Decent nasi kandar, but my vote still goes to .
