Pau Kee, Jalan Imbi

by Bangsar Babe

My friends have been telling me about the kai si hor fun (chicken kuay teow soup) at Pau Kee in Jalan Imbi – apparently, it’s better than the one at Mei Sin, which isn’t too far away. They serve Ipoh style hor fun, steamed chicken, curry mee and also wantan mee, though waiting time can be quite long.

Kai Si Hor Fun

When I was there, I had to wait for more than half an hour before my food arrived. That said, the chicken hor fun was good stuff – the broth was sweet and aromatic from the prawns, and the noodles were relatively smooth.

Steamed chicken

The steamed chicken comes with a bed of blanched beansprouts, with light drizzles of soy sauce and sesame oil. This was alright, though the beansprouts weren’t as crunchy as I wanted it to be. I reckon the beansprouts could have been slightly old, hence the less than juicy outcome. Fortunately, the chicken was tender and nicely seasoned, so I still enjoyed the dish.

Creamy broth, but light in body

I also tried the curry mee, which was not too bad. While I expected the gravy to be thicker and more robust, this was lighter and sweeter, but creamy from the addition of coconut milk. If you like your curry mee less spicy, you’ll like this. For those who wants the spice level up a notch, sambal chili is provided on the side for you to add to your noodles. 😉

Sui Kow Soup

The sui kow soup wasn’t much to shout about as there was very little filling versus dumpling skin. A pity though, as the filling was tasty. I reckon the prawn wantan soup would be a better option as I spied the table next door ordering that, and the wantan looked plumper.

Our bill was slightly less than RM30 for all the above, inclusive of two drinks. Not too shabby, I feel. If you’re ever in the area, give this a try! Pau Kee is next to the Honda Showroom in Imbi, if you need a landmark.

Verdict: The kai si hor fun is pretty good here. If you want something more substantial, the steamed chicken is worth checking out too.
