E Soo Yong Tau Foo, Kepong

by Bangsar Babe

Kepong is a place that rif and I enjoy exploring for good food – despite the language barrier, the gems discovered are worth the hassle and sometimes, miscommunication. E Soo Yong Tau Foo in Bandar Menjalara is popular for its yong tau foo as well as cooked dishes such as pork ribs curry, house special tofu, steamed fish and pork belly stew.

Fuss free dining

Service is brisk though it’s best you don’t ponder too long when placing your order as the uncle can be a bit edgy when you’re indecisive. We ordered some fried and soup yong tau foo (RM1.50 per piece), along with a small portion of curried pork ribs (RM15) and steamed house tofu (RM10).

Soup Yong Tau Foo

The yong tau foo is slightly on the pricey side but portion is fair and they are quite generous with the filling. I liked the stuffed brinjal as it was cooked till tender but still retained its shape. The fish paste filling was tasty and aromatic from the addition of minced pork.

Brown sauce and chilli sauce

E Soo serves a similar chilli sauce and brown sauce as Chan Chan Yong Tau Foo, though I find this version tastier. The fried yong tau foo went especially well with the brown sauce, which was sweet-ish and garlicky.

Pork ribs curry

I thought the pork ribs curry was just alright. It was adequately thick and spicy though it could use a bit more oomph. That said, the ribs were well flavoured and tender enough. I rather enjoyed the house special tofu which came topped with plenty of fried seaweed for a burst of umami.

House special tofu

There was plenty of gravy to go with the tofu which I really liked, as I love eating my rice drenched with sauce/gravy. The tofu had a firm yet smooth texture and an egg-y finish. Nothing to shout about but if you love tofu, you’ll like this too.

Our bill came up to about RM50 inclusive of drinks and two bowls of rice. Not too shabby considering the amount we ordered. If you happen to be around the area (E Soo is located across Tesco Village Mall), give this a try.
