Sugar Rush in Section 16, PJ has been the talk of town since they first opened in Pusat Bandar Damansara. The original outlet has since closed and the dessert parlour recently relocated to a spacious corner lot in Section 16 Petaling Jaya.
An extension of Sugar Rush’s online business, the dessert parlour serves an assortment of freshly baked cakes, breads and sweet treats, beautifully displayed on a table runway at the centre of the shop. At 5pm on a weekend, the place was packed and to some extent, border-lining chaos. Service (although apologetic) was disoriented because there wasn’t enough manpower to attend to the volume of customers that evening.
We tried the Chocolate Ganache with Salted Buttercream (RM12.80) and Lemon Poppyseed Butter Cake (RM12.80) and a stack of pancakes (RM13.80). I rather enjoyed the butter cake as it was moist and dense, with bits of poppyseed and lashes of lemon buttercream frosting.
A standout was the Chocolate Ganache, an incredibly decadent treat of chocolate cake with a thick layer of salted buttercream and thicker dressing of chocolate ganache. While I enjoyed the butter cake, rif and Shum preferred this.
The pancakes although light and fluffy, didn’t really bowl me over. I thought it tasted more like a spongecake rather than pancake. That said, this wasn’t too bad; just not my cup of tea. I wasn’t impressed with the coffee though, for both my flat white (RM10) and Shum’s latte (RM10) had more milk than coffee. rif’s Americano (RM10) however, was quite good.
All in, I liked the cakes and the ambiance is cosy for catch-up sessions with friends. Of course, the place gets really packed in the evenings so you might want to plan your visit accordingly.
