Henri Charpentier, Singapore

by Bangsar Babe

When news of Henri Charpentier opening a dessert salon in Dempsey Hills came out, we know we had to give it a try when we were in Singapore for a weekend. This renowned French-Japanese patisserie is known for its crepe suzette, flambéed in Grand Marnier and prepared tableside.

Romantic setting

The place is beautiful – covered walkway lined with fuchsia pink carpet, silk draping and plush seats in a romantic setting. It is a lovely place for dates or cosy get togethers, especially if you secure a seat by the window overlooking the greens.

Tableside preparation

As Henri Charpentier was named after a French chef who created the crepe suzette, it was only right to order one to try. The crepe (SGD22) was prepared tableside where a mix of butter, orange juice and Grand Marnier is added into the hot pan and flambéed.

Crepe Suzette

For a fine establishment, I expected the staff to be better trained – our waitress had a bit of fumble during the tableside preparation. Also, I believe the original crepe suzette should come with three types of liquors as opposed to just one – Grand Marnier, Triple Sec and Brandy. That aside, the crepe was quite good albeit pricey. Beyond the showcase of orange-blue flames, it was in the end, a humble plate of orange-soaked crepes. :P

Strawberry Shortcake

The strawberry shortcake (SGD9.50) had a rather refined spongecake – buttery and moist – and layered with ripe strawberries, whipped cream and tart syrup to cut the sweetness. Nothing particularly mind-blowing but we both enjoyed it.

Madelines

If I had to pick one thing at Henri Charpentier that really impressed, it would be the Madeleine, baked fresh daily. I had the luck of trying one that came right out of the oven and it was incredible. The scent of baked butter was ever so pronounced, and these shell-shaped treats were moist and fluffy from the rum and blended Hokkaido flour used. A piece retails at SGD2.90.

Americano

We paid about SGD75 for the above, inclusive of a black coffee (SGD7) and a glass of white wine (SGD14). Though our experience was good, a session at Henri Charpentier isn’t cheap. Be prepared to splurge a little when you’re there. :)
