POKC Cafe, Damansara Utama

Now that we live on our own, our weekends are spent cleaning the house, buying groceries, working on the blog and attending to the nitty gritty things that never seem to stop popping up. rif and I were in Damansara Utama last weekend running errands, when we spotted POKC Cafe along the row of shoplots facing the LDP.

Love the counter decor on the first floor!

Vintage touches

The first thing that caught my fancy was the all-black façade – it caught my interest more than the other cafés along the row did. The name POKC stands for People of Kheng Chew (from the Hainan province) and the menu offers Hainanese dishes with a twist. I like the interior – deliberately mismatched with key pieces to liven up the place. Very industrial-chic, I thought.

Long Black (RM8)

We were there for a quick coffee and quality time with each other, and the ambiance proved very ideal. At least for now – less jostling and noise. They get the coffee beans from Papa Palheta and my flat white (RM10) was pretty decent. Comparable to the one I had in Pulp and Papa Palheta in Singapore.

Chocolate Truffle Cake (RM15)

The chocolate truffle (RM15) is a must order if you asked me. Moist, moderately dense and lightly sweet, dressed with crumbled bits of chocolate and ganache squares on top. Solid stuff! I spotted quite a number of patrons having the lamb stew pot (RM25) and followed suit. You get to have it with white rice or Hainan bread – go for the latter.

Lamb Stew Pot (RM25)

I scooped out tender chunks of lamb pieces, some with tasty bone marrow, flavourful from the long hours of cooking in thick gravy. The gravy isn’t the usual dark, robustly flavoured stew I’m accustomed to. Instead, it was lighter in colour but definitely not devoid of spices. rif and I both enjoyed this and wouldn’t mind ordering it again.

Love the furniture pairing!

Service was attentive in general, although some staff would require a bit more training. Not that big an issue, because I’m already planning my next visit when I’m running errands around the area.
