Reuben Hills was another café rif and I checked out for breakfast and we really enjoyed the food. Just a 10-minute walk from Central Station, the café is tucked away in Albion Street in Surry Hills – fairly easy to find.

I liked the décor at Reuben Hills – the interior reminded me of Toby’s Estate in Singapore, but more kitschy. The menu is exciting to read because the descriptions were bold and OTT; made me want to order everything from the entire menu.

Pretty latte art

Coffee is said to be pretty good here so I ordered my usual latte (AUD 4.50). Like the latte at Two Good Eggs, Reuben Hill’s version was smooth, milky and fairly mild on espresso. That said, the coffee art was really pretty and since I’m a sucker for pretty coffee art, the lattes in Sydney tastes better visually haha!

Soft Baked Eggs with jamon, spinach, ranchero & rye

I ordered the Soft Baked Eggs with jamon, spinach, ranchero & rye (AUD 17) and rif went for the Really Fucking Great Fried Chicken with chilli in a basket (AUD 16). Baked eggs are one of my favourite ways to eat eggs – it’s simple yet somewhat elegant. Reuben Hill’s baked eggs were perfectly cooked with salty notes from the ham.

There’s just something about baked eggs…

Really Fucking Great Fried Chicken

But what really knocked our socks off was the fried chicken – boneless and beautifully seasoned with herbs and spices. The chicken pieces were juicy and tender, and moreish with the dipping sauces provided (chilli mayo and salsa). You also get fresh tortilla to mop up the juices and grease from the fried chicken. This was really fucking great fried chicken, pardon my language.

Yes…really fucking great! :P

Doggs Breakfast

We also shared the Doggs Breakfast (AUD 9), an ice cream sandwich with salted caramel. Every mouthful was chewy with a salty-sweet aftertaste from the caramel. Simple, yet good stuff.

Despite the good food, we found Reuben Hills slightly on the high side. Service was prompt but mechanical – hardly as warm as at Two Good Eggs. But try to move past that and treat yourself to a good breakfast and some fucking great fried chicken.
