My favourite bakers, Nigel and Allan of Just Heavenly have recently opened a cafe on the second floor (new wing) of Bangsar Shopping Centre. The outlet is simple, yet tastefully done and service is friendly. Some of the staff there double up as eye candy, which complements the dining experience. 😉
On our first visit, we tried the penne carbonara (RM22), which I quite enjoyed. It had a good balance of cream and seasoning, with a generous portion of beef bacon. I would prefer a thicker and more cloying version of carbonara, but I doubt everyone can stomach that.
The BLT burger was good stuff. I liked what they did with the patty – well seasoned, thick and juicy. Very satisfying. And the combination of chunky mushroom sauce, lettuce and tomato was rich yet nicely balanced. The only thing I didn’t fancy was the chips. I found them a tad dry and gritty.
rif had the beef pie, also known as The Tiger (RM25). This was another of Just Heavenly’s best seller. Tender beef chunks in thick gravy, topped with puff pastry and baked till golden brown perfection, it was a welcome sight. That said, I wasn’t as impressed with it as I was with the burger.
We capped off the meal with a grilled nutella and banana sandwich (RM12) and coffee. If you like your coffee less bold, try the cappuccino or latte. I find these two perfect for winding down after a day. Otherwise, you can always ask for an espresso.
The toast was lovely. A simple yet genius combination of cinnamon toasted sourdough bread, nutella, banana, crushed hazelnuts and orange reduction.
We returned the following week for brunch — Monsieur Bullseye, coconut chicken salad and the ridiculously large breakfast. The ridiculously large breakfast (RM32) was not as ridiculously large as I expected it to be. That’s because I have a ridiculously large appetite. If you’re keen on trying this, it is available all day on weekends and public holidays.
I found it just alright. The hotcakes were average, but their breakfast salsa was really good. The Monsieur Bullseye was better. Poached egg on a turkey ham and cheese toasted sandwich, it was an atas version of the Chinese coffeeshop ham and cheese sandwich. Do give this a try!
If I had to recommend only one item at Just Heavenly, it’s the coconut chicken salad. Boy, it was so good! Very Thai like, and I love the twist. The chicken pieces were poached in coconut milk, and tossed with a piquant ulam and ginger flower salad. And the house made chili jam … was tres delicious!
On a whole, I found the food pretty good. While I didn’t like everything I tried, I’ll definitely go back for the burger, carbonara and omg … the coconut chicken salad!
