Teng Haw Kedai Kopi, Kuantan

by Bangsar Babe

I’ve heard good things about Teng Haw Kedai Kopi from my Kuantan friend, who claims they serve the best curry mee in Kuantan. Like most curry mee places there, the style of curry mee is unique to Kuantan.

We got there late (10.30am) so they unfortunately ran out of brinjal yong tau fu, which happens to be a favourite of Jien and I. Still, we proceeded with our order and opted for the remaining yong tau fu pieces they had – ladies finger and tofu puffs.

Small (front) and large curry mee, at RM6 and RM8 respectively.

They ran out of brinjal yong tau fu so we made do with whatever was left.

Konlo noodles for the little ones

A bowl of curry mee costs RM6 at Teng Haw Kedai Kopi, and should you choose to size up, it’s RM8 for a large portion. We also ordered a bowl of dark sauce (konlo) noodles for the little ones, just in case they can’t stomach the curry broth.

At first glance, the curry broth looked light, but flavours hit you almost immediately. There’s a layer of orange-specked oil, which came from the “pecah minyak” process where the curry spices are cooked till aromatic.

Spices are punchy and the broth has a strong santan flavour

Broth isn’t the super thick and rich kind, but it holds its weight where coconut milk and spices are concerned. This is one of the better Kuantan-style curry mee I’ve eaten. But this is a comparison made among all the curry mee I’ve eaten in Kuantan only, not all over Malaysia.

You can opt to add more sambal cili into your noodles for extra kick.

If you want more kick, help yourself to the sambal cili at the front of the counter. Though I have to warn you, it packs quite a wallop – I started sweating right after. The yong tau fu (or whatever bits I got) is standard fare and since I didn’t get to eat their whole range, I can’t comment as much until I try everything.

Roti bakar and soft boiled eggs

Teng Haw Kedai Kopi also serves soft boiled eggs (RM1.70) and roti bakar (RM3), which we ordered for the little ones to supplement their konlo noodles.

I was told a lot of locals go to Teng Haw Kedai Kopi for their curry mee fix in Kuantan.

Overall, I enjoyed the curry mee at Teng Haw Kedai Kopi. I might prefer this over Hoi Yin and Ah Soon, slightly. Prices are reasonable by Kuantan standard and portion is fair.
