Auntie Ling’s Nyonya Cendol

by Bangsar Babe

Jien listed down Aunty Ling’s Nyonya Cendol at Medan Selera Wawasan in SS3 on our to-try list as as we’ve been on a lookout for a good Nyonya cendol spot in KL. On our first visit (after lunch nearby), we tried the Nyonya cendol which made a good impression, so we went back a week later on an empty stomach to try all that Aunty Ling’s Nyonya Cendol had to offer.

Aunty Ling’s Nyonya Cendol is an unassuming spot along the row of stalls at Medan Selera Wawasan. Besides the Nyonya Cendol, Aunty Ling also serves nasi lemak kukus, mee siam, laksa and otak-otak, all of which we tried during our second visit. As my in-laws are Peranakans from Melaka, I was exposed to Nyonya food from the on-set, so my expectations are generally high when it comes to eating Melaka Nyonya food outside of home.

Nyonya Laksa

Aunty Ling’s Nyonya laksa (RM10) hits all the right notes. The laksa broth is aromatic and spicy from the spices used, and rich from the santan. It comes with half an egg, julienned cucumber, prawns and a dollop of sambal on the side.

I always go for yellow noodles and vermicelli combo for my Nyonya laksa

Nyonya Nasi Lemak Kukus

The nasi lemak kukus with rendang chicken (RM11.50) was surprisingly good. Rice was cooked till fluffy and there’s a good amount of aromatics from the pandan leaves and lemongrass. The rice isn’t the “lemak” type but you get the richness from the sambal, which is robust from the chillies and belacan yet sweet from the caramelised onions.

Delicious chicken rendang and the sambal packs heat

I also liked the rendang chicken as it’s thick and robustly flavoured, with an underlying sweetness – evidently Nyonya style rendang. I suggest requesting for some extra rendang sauce to add to the nasi lemak to give it more oomph. Our two little girls enjoyed this, sambal and all.

Otak otak

We waited 30 minutes for Aunty Ling’s otak otak (RM10.50), which was also quite tasty. This went well as a sidekick to the nasi lemak and mee siam. The otak otak had a good balance of spices and umami, with a firm texture so there’s a nice bite. A good sharing dish, I’d say.

Mee Siam

The mee Siam (RM9) wasn’t what Jien and I expected – we like it sourish (from the tamarind) but this one tasted more like fried meehoon. Not a bad thing really, but it’s just not to our liking. The accompanying sambal packed a wallop, which went well with this mee Siam.

Let’s talk cendol.

Jien and I have been on a lookout for good Melaka-style cendol in Klang Valley (and also Melaka) as our go-to person in Melaka has since retired. When we tried Aunty Ling’s Nyonya Cendol (RM6) for the first time, both our eyes lit up.

Aunty Ling’s Nyonya Cendol hits all the right spots!

It was very similar to the one we like in Melaka! Aunty Ling’s Nyonya Cendol got the Gula Melaka pat down – it’s properly caramelised with a hint of savouriness from the salt. The coconut milk is also of the right thickness and I believe a pinch of salt was added to give it more depth.

This was from our first visit two weeks prior

The green cendol is redolent of pandan flavour and it has this QQ consistency which Jien and I like. Cendol strands are short and rounder than usual, which gives me the impression that this is made by hand. It is also clear that the red beans are prepared in-house – tender but not mushy, with a moderate amount of sweetness.

Fixed table seating of 4 per time

Parking isn’t the easiest to find I’ll admit, and the table setting allows for only 4 people to sit per time. No issue for us but if you’re going in a larger group, you’ll have to sit separately.

Definitely coming back for more!

All in all, we enjoyed the food and cendol at Aunty Ling’s Nyonya Cendol. The place is fuss-free and the owner and his daughter are polite and friendly. Expect to wait a little as dishes are prepared upon order.

Verdict: I really like the Aunty Ling’s cendol as it reminds me of the one my favourite spot in Melaka. The Nyonya laksa is also delicious.

Rm9 for mee siam is too pricey!
Tried the dishes there before, averagely was ok, nothing special.
Since it is at a food court, we expected the price to be slightly cheaper
