“There’s this place called Da Shi Xiong in Section 17 that serves everything steamed and it’s really good. We’ve been going with our friends almost every weekend”, said my in-laws. I’ll admit – the thought of going to a place that steams everything doesn’t excite me.
But still, I gave Da Shi Xiong a try since it was raved about. The stall is located in Kedai Kopi Yun Kei – this place operates as a coffeeshop during the day and come dinner time, Da Shi Xiong takes over. The menu is fairly small and everything is steamed.
We ordered the steamed dragon grouper (RM91), brinjal (RM16), okra (RM12), egg (RM10) and pork bone soup with pork ribs (RM25). All vegetables come with a standard seasoning – oyster sauce, shallot oil and fried shallots as far as I know.
On my subsequent visit, the lettuce (RM12) and tofu (RM6) also had oyster sauce and fried shallots as the seasoning / topping. While the vegetables and tofu tasted decent, I can’t help but wonder what’s the appeal of Da Shi Xiong. Because the toppings are very simple and almost zero effort is needed in terms of seasoning.
The dragon grouper was fresh and cooked just right so the texture of the fish was smooth yet firm to bite. Not a big fan of the soy sauce used as it’s a bit heavy for the fish. My favourite at Da Shi Xiong is the pork bone soup as it has a peppery aftertaste which I like. Even more so on a rainy day. I would come back for this.
Granted the eggplant was tender and steamed egg was smooth, I wouldn’t go as far to say Da Shi Xiong is “really good”. It’s a healthy and somewhat delicious meal that feels homey. I guess that’s why a lot of families and elderlies patronize the place.
There’s also curry fish head which needs to be pre-ordered but if they’re going to use a steamer for this, thanks but no thanks.
