Sun Fong, Kuantan

by Bangsar Babe

Sun Fong in Kuantan is pretty much an institution – a popular dining option among the locals, and often preferred over (what deems to be touristy) Alor Akar Seafood, which I happen to like. Since we stayed longer in Kuantan earlier this year, Jien and I decided to give Sun Fong a try.

Simple interior. The space is small so it’s best to call ahead to book your table.

We were asked to go early as the restaurant is small and cannot accommodate that many customers. By 6.30pm, there was already a line outside. The signature beancurd and fish bun came highly recommended so we ordered that on top of the salted egg yolk squid, fried kailan with salted fish, steamed catfish (ikan buang) and signature spare ribs with seafood sauce.

Top: Marmite fish with mantau, Bottom: Signature fried beancurd

Food didn’t take long to arrive and the beancurd fish bun is presented two-ways – marmite style and wrapped in mantau for the fish, and salad style for the homemade beancurd, topped with mayonnaise. In terms of flavour, the marmite coating is a tad sweet for my liking. But still enjoyable. If I’m not mistaken, it’s RM6 per piece.

Soy Sauce Steamed Catfish

As expected when you’re in the east coast, fish is fresh and our steamed catfish (RM8.50 per 100g) was delicious. I was going through a massive fish eating phase since I was expecting so I enjoyed this very much. The patin was fresh and firm, so little needs to be done to elevate the flavours.

Salted Egg Yolk Squid

I thought the salted egg yolk squid (RM25 – small) was pretty average. This was cooked well but we found the salted egg yolk coating too light for our taste. Jien and I still prefer the version at Alor Akar as it’s more robustly flavours (read: artery clogging).

Signature Spare Ribs with Seafood Sauce

Sun Fong is pretty generous with the pork lard in the claypot kailan. It also comes with plenty of salted fish and garlic so there’s good flavour and aroma. I found the signature spare ribs (RM28 – small) decent but nothing to shout about. The pork is tender and well-seasoned, but that’s pretty much it.

Overall, we had a good meal at Sun Fong but I wouldn’t say it’s better than Alor Akar. It’s different where flavours are noticeably lighter and cleaner, so it boils down to personal preference. Jien and I like our tai chow dishes stronger flavours hence why we prefer .
