I’ve read positive reviews about Sukniyom Thai Restaurant in Kota Damansara, which prompted us to pay them a visit when we were in the vicinity. The restaurant is located on the first floor along the row of shoplots facing the main road — not exactly easy to find since the area is dimly lit at night.
It was almost a full house when we were there, with a large group celebrating a friend’s birthday. At that time, they seemed really short-handed and couldn’t even prepare the drink we ordered or take our food orders. Not a good start to our experience at Sukniyom Thai.
Still, we waited patiently for our Thai green milk tea which took more than 30 minutes to be ready. It was diluted by the way. Floor service was practically non-existent — no one came to give us plates and cutlery even after our dishes arrived. White rice was also no where to be seen despite several reminders.
After all the delay we experienced, the food at Sukniyom Thai Restaurant unfortunately didn’t impress. We ordered their signatures — seafood tomyam, green curry chicken, panang curry pork, pad see ew and a stir-fried kailan. They ran out of otak otak and grilled pork shoulder that night.
We thought the pad see ew (RM18) was quite good; similar to the ones we’ve eaten in Hatyai. The green curry chicken (RM30) was thick and creamy, but lacked flavour and aroma so the notes were just sweet and lemak.
Better was the Panang pork curry (RM30) though not good enough to warrant a hoo-haa. While this dish was spicy enough, it’s somehow missing the layers of depth (from spices and fresh herbs) which you usually get when eating Thai food.
The seafood tomyam (RM35) was decent but if you’re looking for the thick and creamy kind, this isn’t the place for you. Sukniyom Thai’s version is soupier and sharper, from the generous use of lemongrass and galangal.
Our bill came close to RM200 for the above inclusive of 3 white rice and 2 drinks. Considering the portion, taste and experience, I’d say our dinner was a disappointment.
