Ampang Mewah Steam Fish Head

by Bangsar Babe

Steamed fish head isn’t really my thing but when there’s a good one to try, I’m all game – like the Ampang Mewah Steam Fish Head at 126 Mewah Food Court. This place was recommended by a friend who also took me to the steamed fish head in Taman Connaught previously.

Look out for this stall inside the 126 Mewah Food Court

Since this friend of ours is a seasoned fish eater, we knew this was no ordinary steamed fish head spot. That said, our friend mentioned his preference over the one at Taman Connaught but Jien and I insisted on trying both places before deciding which we liked better.

It’s best to arrive early at Ampang Mewah Steam Fish Head as the peak hour is from noon onwards. We got there at 11am and already, there were a few tables waiting for their steamed fish head order. Good thing my friend called in advance to pre-order so we didn’t wait longer than 15 minutes for our food to be ready.

Between the three of us, we ordered one ginger sliced steamed fish head and the spicy bean paste steamed fish head to share. With a plate of blanched lettuce (yau mak) for greens.

Spot the fish underneath all that ginger slivers!

I preferred the ginger sliced steamed fish head over the spicy bean paste version as the former packs more kick from the copious amount of ginger slivers. They were also fairly generous with the rice wine so the gravy is aromatic and spicy, completely masking the “muddy” taste of the Sung fish.

That said, it was harder to taste the fish at Ampang Mewah Steam Fish Head since the ginger and rice wine overpowers the flavour of the fish. The version at Big Tree Lin Kee offers a better balance so I prefer that more.

Fish is cooked well

Ampang Mewah Steam Fish Head does a sweeter version of spicy bean paste – personally, I prefer it with more garlic and chilli to liven up the overall flavours of the dish. This version tastes a bit one-dimensional so it gets a bit “jelak” after a while.

Blanched yau mak

Overall, the steamed fish head here is quite decent. Flavours are stronger and bolder, so if your palate leans towards that spectrum, you’ll enjoy the food here. When it comes too fish, Jien and I seek for a more balanced profile so we prefer the steamed fish head from .

A spot to consider if you’re a steamed fish head fan

The bill came up to about RM90 for all the above inclusive of 3 plates of rice. Pretty reasonable if you ask me. Do dress accordingly if you’re planning to eat at Ampang Mewah Steam Fish Head as it can be quite hot when the weather is humid.
