When I was a kid, Mid-Autumn Festival meant bringing out my lantern to play. Mum got me the chicken while my brother got the dragon and my sister, a fish. As a grown-up, this festival means having lots of mooncakes to eat and given how much we enjoy this occasion, top hotels and restaurants in KL showcase their creativity in mooncake box packaging as well as flavours every year. Here are some of the options for mooncakes this year – they make great gifts for friends and loved ones!
The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur
This year, The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur team goes big – and I mean size. Their Super Mooncake (6.5” Prosperity Mooncake) comes with eight (8) golden yolks and easily feeds 10-12 adults. Every bit of mooncake you cut into has a segment of yolk, so that’s definitely a highlight if you’re a salted egg yolk fan. Packaging is really nice too; elegant yet understated – very in-line with the St. Regis brand.
A box of four classic mooncakes cost RM140++ while the super mooncake with eight egg yolks cost RM200++ per piece. For orders, please contact 03-2727 6699, click here to download order form or email [email protected].
Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur
Durian mooncake (RM34.50) is an all-time favourite at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur. It is said to be one of the best in town and according to my other half who’s big on durian mooncakes, this is the best he’s eaten this year and in the past years. I personally prefer their chocolate mooncakes made of chocolate ganache in three different flavours – Manjari dark chocolate with raspberry jelly, caramelised white chocolate and Gianduja hazelnut chocolate with oolong tea (RM47 each).
