Sam U Claypot Restaurant, PJ State

by Bangsar Babe

Sam U Claypot Restaurant in PJ State used to be one of my regular eating spots when I’m in the area as the claypot fish curry is pretty decent. It’s been a while since I went back until two weekends ago, when I met up with a friend for some wine shopping.

Fish curry

They are known for their fish curry as well as steamed chicken with rice, but we opted to go with dishes that afternoon. Service was quick and the auntie who served us, pleasant. That said, I feel the food wasn’t as good as I remembered it to be.

The bittergourd with salted egg yolk (RM17) was lacking wok aroma and I felt it was cooked in a hurry as the slices of bittergourd was still watery. This tasted rather flat as a result. I also found the hot and sour soup (RM15) very disappointing as it was more sweet than anything else.

Claypot tofu

Better was the claypot tofu (RM23), which went well with rice, but it wasn’t a highlight at Sam U Claypot. The fish curry (RM35) was fortunately still tasty. You get thick slices of fish in rich, spicy curry broth – I liked that there’s a good hint of belacan and dried shrimp in the gravy base.

All in all, I still felt lunch was disappointing apart from the fish curry. If I were to return, I’d only go for the curry.
