Line Clear Nasi Kandar, Kampung Baru

by Bangsar Babe

After a family tussle over the ownership of Line Clear Nasi Kandar in Penang, one of the proprietors opened LC Restaurant in Kampung Baru. It is said that the outlet in Penang is now run by the cousin, and the original recipe for Line Clear’s famous nasi kandar is only available at the Kampung Baru outlet.

Line Clear in Kampung Baru operates in a spacious building that can accommodate than 300 patrons in one seating. The ambiance is more pleasant too, minus the drains and roadside chaos one has to endure when in Penang. But one thing remains the same – the queue.

My “kuah master”

Expect a queue at the food counter especially if you dine during peak hours. Service is prompt and friendly, from the staff scooping your food to the one taking your drinks order. I opted for my usual – ayam kicap, telur ikan (fish egg), sayur kubis (cabbage) and telur masin (salted egg). My “kuah” master was pretty good with his mixing as my curried rice hit the spot.

The ayam kicap was also pretty good; mildly spicy with a caramelised flavour from the reduction of the black sauce and onions. I like to add salted egg in my nasi kandar because it gives the rice a bit more flavour. That said, the telur dadar at Line Clear is worth checking out so if you spot it, order that instead. I regretted my salted egg choice slightly after eating some of rif’s telur dadar.

rif opted for the fried chicken (just to compare), and it wasn’t much to shout about. Line Clear is known for its ayam kicap so ordering that would be wise. I thought the deep fried bittergourd could have been crispier but this was decent enough to go with the nasi kandar.

Kuah campur

Service is quick and if you need additional kuah, ask the staff for some and they will usually oblige. At least, that was what I noticed during my meal there. Our bill came up to about RM28 inclusive of two drinks. Pretty reasonable considering what we ordered.

Regardless of what happened to the Line Clear business in Penang, I’m glad they decided to come to Kampung Baru as this adds to my nasi kandar options in town.

Verdict: The Line Clear’s Nasi Kandar in Kampung Baru is as good or if not, slightly better than the one in Penang. I guess that also depends on the kuah master you get on that day. 😉
