A burger to me, is a balanced architecture of taste and excellence. The meat patty has to be a mix of fatty and lean, and it should always be cooked medium rare. The burger bun should be soft yet firm enough to hold, brushed with butter and toasted on one side.
There are many places around town that serves a good burger these days – I have my favourites. But what draws me to The Counter Burger in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur is the fact that I can custom build my own burger. And they don’t judge. Or at least I think they don’t because when I was there on two occasions, there were no judge-y eyes from the floor staff.
See, The Counter offers a choice of 150gm, 225gm and 450gm of patty (there’s a choice of beef, chicken breast, ahi tuna, turkey or vegan veggie) which you can opt to eat on a bun or salad style. This allows you to eat healthy or indulge in a mouth-watering mess like I did. Frankly speaking, if I wanted to ‘eat healthy’, I would go to a salad bar instead.
My mouth-watering mess comprised a 450gm halal certified beef patty (RM46) which I lavishly embellished with three types of cheeses (sharp provolone, soft-ripened brie and jalapeno jack) and spiced up with an assortment of sauces (habanero salsa, country buttermilk ranch and roasted garlic aioli). To add to its monstrosity, I added oven toasted tomatoes, grilled red onion, roasted green chiles, red peppers, pickles, jalapenos, grilled pineapple and a sunny side up. Pick between a brioche style bun, Ciabatta, English muffin, sourdough, multigrain or pretzel bun – I went for the crowd favourite brioche.
If the floor staff didn’t judge, I’m pretty sure the chef did. Because my custom built burger was a towering mess of deliciousness, and one that was larger than my face. When it arrived, rif and I took one good look and laughed out loud. Because it was so huge that eating it without making a mess would be tough. And also because we both knew it was an easy feat for me. 😉
Because the burger was made with all my favourite ingredients, it was so good. The patty was cooked to my preferred doneness of medium rare (you can specify the doneness you want) and it was meaty, chunky, saucy, cheesy, spicy and everything I want in a burger, which I got in a whole mouthful.
rif had the 150gm beef patty (RM32) which he custom built moderately to allow him to enjoy the natural flavour of the patty. I do agree that this allows the flavour of the beef to stand out, but to be fair, I had triple the size of his patty and I could already taste plenty of flavour. Plus I was just plain greedy hahaha!
You can also custom build your milkshakes, which I did on both visits – my first visit was an indulgent nutella, peanut butter and brownie shake and my second, a salted caramel, nutella and cookie version.
They do pretty good fries too; I tried the Parmesan Fries (RM20) and Sweet Sriracha Fries (RM18), which you can do a half and half (RM20). The former comes seasoned with parsley, rosemary, garlic aioli and topped with cheese shavings while the Sriracha (made in-house) could have been spicier for that extra kick.
I was told by the staff that no female has successfully finished the 450gm burger with all the add-ons and they were stunned I did it effortlessly, twice. Plus I had a milkshake and fries to go with that. I guess you can always attempt to beat that record (which isn’t difficult), so when you do, tell me! 😛
