Ever since we got hitched, rif and I would spend Chinese New Year with his parents and grandfather in Melaka. Sadly, Ah Kong passed away last year so this year, we had our reunion dinner at his family home in Bangsar.
His mother would always prepare the same lavish spread each year, comprising Nyonya specialities such as ayam pongteh, ayam buah keluak and jiu hu char. This year, we had a total of 13 dishes to tuck into, including her sumptuous siew yuk and grilled pork ribs. rif and I on the other hand contributed a pot of mussels which I cooked with white wine and cream sauce.
This morning, we had breakfast with his family, said our Chinese New Year wishes and gave out ang pows to his nephew and nieces before leaving KL for Sitiawan, where I will be meeting my parents and grandmother.
Traffic was horrendous and despite leaving KL at 1pm, we only reached our hotel in Sitiawan at 7pm and was just in the nick of time for dinner. Will be leaving for KL tomorrow and spending the rest of the weekend at home, hosting both our families.
It also hit me that I’m heading to London in a week and I’ve yet to pack! The weather is chilly this time of the year so I’m going to have a bit more fun with layering. It’s been a few years since I last went back and I’m flying in a day earlier to spend some alone time with Kinga, my former flatmate in Uni.
After that, it will be more of Haig Club related activities and of course, the much anticipated dinner with David Beckham. I’m giddy with excitement at the thought of that!
That said, I hope it’s not too late to wish all of you a very Happy Chinese New Year. May the year bring you plenty of joy, good health, laughter and prosperity! 🙂
