Ipoh is becoming one of my favourite spots to visit over the long weekend. It is (still) less congested compared to Melaka and Penang, but still bustling with old school charms and cafés. While Penang remains my favourite spot for good hawker food, I prefer the ambiance in Ipoh – less hectic. rif and I like Burps & Giggles along Ipoh Kong Heng, for the food and décor.
The café occupies the stretch of old shoplots at Kong Heng and serves Western, Asian and sweet treats. We tried two burgers, Jammy and Greeko, both priced at RM18 each. I wouldn’t say the burgers were the best I’ve eaten but these were decent enough to satisfy the tummy.
The fries come with a choice of cheese or truffle oil. We opted for cheese, which was too scarce a ratio compared to the fries. Coffee isn’t much to shout about – my iced latte was alright, but rif’s order (Magnolia Ugly) was more memorable.
We adjourned to the next room for dessert and a change of ambiance. Crepes have been a favourite of mine since I had them in Paris and London. I enjoyed the sweet crepe of pear, mars chunks, mascarpone dollops and ginger butterscotch. This was a nice play of tangy, sweet and chocolate flavours.
The savoury version was also pretty decent. This came filled with creamy thyme-infused mushroom, potato cubes, basil and cheddar for a rich, gooey centre. I was told the owners maintained the nature of the shoplots, while adding whimsical touches to the décor. There are plenty of vintage knick knacks on display – my mother in-law loved this place when we brought her here.
