A few years back, I thought BBQ ribs are best if they were pork, not beef. But not anymore. I’ve enjoyed some very good beef ribs and found them tastier compared to the swine version. When we were in Sydney last July, I decided to do lunch at Hurricane’s Grill, said to serve the best ribs in the city.
Unless you’re here early, expect to wait a good 30-45 minutes for a table. The restaurant gets very crowded (and noisy) come lunch and dinnertime. Not a place I would consider if I’m out on a date. The ribs are marinated in special basting sauces originating from South Africa, to ensure a unique and flavoursome experience.
While flavours were good, the pork ribs didn’t knock my socks off. These were a tad dry and stringy, and didn’t absorb the sauce – it was saucy on the outside but plain tasting at the centre. I’ve had better in Bali.
Hurricane’s Grill’s beef ribs tasted much better. The meat – slathered with sauce – was impressively tender and clinging to the bone. Each bite was juicy and delicious with a smoky-sweet aftertaste. Now this was finger-licking good. Not the pork ribs.
Mum being the healthy one had the catch of the day – grilled snapper with lemon butter sauce on the side. I didn’t care much for this, but the fish was quite fresh. Service was fairly efficient and the food didn’t take long to arrive. We got ours in 15 minutes tops.

Ambiance: 7/10
Price: 6/10
Food: 6/10 (non halal)
Verdict: Go for the beef ribs. The pork ribs aren’t much to shout about.

If you’re ever in Sydney, give this a try. Only the beef ribs ya. Pork ribs not so good.
