Despite being in Jakarta for only a short weekend, rif and I managed to try a very good gado-gado, thanks to my friend’s mother. She’s a big foodie and knows all the good places to eat in the city. She picked us up from our hotel and drove all the way to north of Jakarta for good Indonesian food.
We had the gado-gado, tahu goreng and rujak — all delicious and new to me. Now I get why my friend insists that the ‘gado-gado’ we have in KL isn’t quite the real deal. The peanut sauce was aromatic and creamy; mild enough not to numb your tongue but still give you a rounded flavour.
I also liked the rujak as the sauce was thick, pungent and laden with chunky roasted peanuts. Unlike the tahu goreng I’ve been accustomed to, this is said to be the real thing where the beancurd isn’t deep fried. And the gravy is a lot lighter so it doesn’t cloy you after a few bites.
Obviously, I don’t know how to get here but here’s a picture of the menu, address and phone number. Good luck finding this place. It’s truly a hidden gem!
