When I was in Singapore early this year, Jeen and Isaac took me to this bar along East Coast Road called Two Fat Men. Since this wasn’t my turf, Isaac did the ordering – basil fried rice (S$6.50) and grilled pork neck (S$9.90).
Service was almost non-existent and in my opinion, the worst I received of all the places I went to in Singapore. Even getting a glass of water took a few reminders. But the basil fried rice was really yummy. And I have to stress ‘really’. It was even tastier than the basil fried rice I ate in Bangkok.
The rice was moist yet separated, and beautifully seasoned. I loved the savoury-sweet and spicy combination, further enriched with the runny yolk.
On the other hand, I found the grilled pork neck very average despite the raves about it. The tangy-spicy marinade was lovely, but the meat was dry. I liken it to a tougher, drier version of char siew.
After this preliminary round of Thai food, we made our way up the road for a bowl of Katong Laksa.

Ambiance: 5/10
Price: 6/10
Food: 6/10 (non halal)
Verdict: I wasn’t impressed with the pork neck, but that was one good basil fried rice!

i think pork neck, just like char siu, takes considerable skills from the chef to execute perfectly.
That’s true. Pity they didn’t do this well.
The fried rice portion looks small, was it enough for you?lol
