Namgor Hainan Kopitiam was on our to-try list as Jien and I are on a lookout for good kopitiams to add to our options. We read on Google that the place is super crowded so it’s best to go early to secure a parking spot and a table.
I’m going to sound critical but I find Namgor Hainan Kopitiam overrated. For starters, the place is really warm so if you’re planning to try their signature noodle items such as Siam laksa, curry mee and Ipoh hor fun, be prepared to sweat.
The Siam laksa (RM10) was probably the best of what we ordered that day. Not that it was spectacular. It was decent but I’d say not an authentic version of Siam laksa. A fusion Siam laksa, but done deliciously. If you’re expecting proper Siam laksa, you probably won’t like Namgor’s version (comes with prawns).
Another signature at Namgor Hainan Kopitiam is the Ipoh hor fun (RM9), which I found very disappointing. I’d say this is a below average bowl of kai si hor fun where the broth is mostly salty with hardly any flavour or sweetness from the prawns. The hor fun is also quite “rough” so there’s no silken texture when you slurp.
Namgor Hainan Kopitiam also offers croissants and toasted breads, which we ordered. Our croissant sandwich (RM7.50) arrived with blackened edges, indicating it was toasted for too long. The croissant was dry and fell apart too easily, and you can taste the bitterness from the burnt sides that they tried to mask with the ham, egg and cheese.
Service was all over the place and I couldn’t even get them to rectify the issue with the burnt croissant. Fortunately, the crunchy peanut bun (RM5.50) wasn’t burnt so there was no bitter note to it. Jien enjoyed this.
The curry mee (RM9.50) took ages and multiple reminders to arrive. Customers who came later than we did got their curry mee earlier. I was sweating like a pig since the place was so humid and we waited rather long for the curry mee to arrive.
When it did, it looked like a rush job. I reckon the person who made this did not put enough “curry paste topping” which is supposed to give the broth more body. So my bowl of curry mee wasn’t “lemak” and lacking flavour.
Namgor Hainan Kopitiam offers salted coffee which I was looking forward to try. It was thick, frothy and aromatic but I still prefer the salted coffee at Yi Feng. The tea could be thicker but that’s just my preference; it’s not bad.
Overall, I find the food at Namgor Hainan Kopitiam underwhelming. Parking is difficult especially on weekdays / peak hours. Even if I’m craving Siam laksa (hypothetically), the overall experience doesn’t warrant the drive and parking hassle.
