When it comes to pork-free or halal Thai food that is wallet-friendly, I feel options are plenty but mediocre. That said, I’ve recently been visiting Mr Thai Street Food in Kota Damansara as the food is decent and prices are affordable.
It’s one of those places we stumbled across since Kota Damansara isn’t a place I frequent, until recently, when work requires me to be in the area. Mr Thai Street Food offers a range of Thai food options – from starters, mains, single dish items and dessert.
Service is quick from my experiences, but it could be because the place isn’t crowded when we went. The green curry chicken is cooked to our liking; Jien and I like the ratio of coconut milk to curry paste at Mr Thai Street Food. This was creamy, spicy and savoury which good aroma from the Thai basil.
We also liked the seafood tomyam as it had just the right balance of sweet, spicy and sour. The prawns were fresh which is a plus point for me. I tried the tom kha gai (coconut chicken soup) in our following visits and it was also good. Thick, sweet and tangy with just the right amount of kick from the chilli and galangal.
Our little ones enjoyed the pandan chicken as it’s well marinated and tender. Definitely a kid-friendly option if you’re dining with your family. The Thai style seafood otak otak is one of the better ones I’ve tried. Generous amount of seafood and tasty otak otak paste so the combination works well.
Crispy kangkung is pretty standard in my opinion – hard to go wrong with batter fried items. Serving is generous at Mr Thai Street Food so a portion is enough for 4 pax. More, if you’re ordering other dishes to share.
If you’re dining in a smaller group or alone, try the Pad Thai and fried glass noodle. Both are done well but if I must pick one, it’s the fried glass noodles. The glass noodles had good wok flavour and the seasoning is on-point. It’s rich from the egg bits, plus the seafood and vegetables give the noodles a good bite.
Even the tub tim krob (red ruby) is prepared to my liking. The water chestnut is crunchy and justly coated with starch. I don’t like it when there’s too much starch as the texture is sticky and unpalatable. Make space in your stomach for this.
Prices range between RM20-30 for the dishes and single plates start from RM12.90 onwards. Pretty good value considering the portion and while it’s not mind-blowingly delicious, it’s a good meal option if you’re looking for Thai food in the area.
