I was aching for banana leaf rice and when both my choices (Sri Ganapathi Mess and Acha Curry House) weren’t open, I tried Kavitha’s Curry House in Petaling Garden instead. Like any other banana leaf rice establishment, Kavitha’s offer a selection of fried items to go with your rice – chicken, fish, squid and bittergourd.
A basic banana leaf rice meal at Kavitha’s comprise white rice or parboiled rice with three vegetable sides and papadum. There’s chicken, fish, salted fish and dhal curry to choose from but truth be told, none of them stood out.
While I thought the mutton varuval was decent, the bittergourd was hard and chewy. Barely any crunch to its exterior. More disappointing was the fried squid, which was rubbery and dry. To make matters worse, portion was pathetic and we were charged RM20 for it.
Overall, I found the food at Kavitha’s hardly memorable and portions were smallish. Perhaps some people would say I failed to order the “right” items but the items above were recommended by the staff. Friendly service though, so that’s the silver lining I suppose.
Ambiance: 5.5/10
Price: 5.5/10
Food: 5/10
Verdict: The curries were ordinary and side orders, unmemorable.
