Fu Gua Thong, Bandar Puteri Puchong

by Bangsar Babe

I was never a fan of bittergourd – a vegetable my mother insisted on when I was growing up. It was often blended into my daily dose of juice and stir fried with garlic. Suffice to say, I developed a great dislike for bittergourd and would equate it to horrible things one should eat when they need to feel healthy.

Interior

When I heard about this restaurant called Fu Gua Thong in Bandar Puteri Puchong, I was admittedly, not interested in paying them a visit. In my biased mind, the food would probably be bitter and hardly appetising. rif dined there with his friends not too long ago and told me the food was really quite good. This intrigued me as he is an even lesser fan of bittergourd than I am.

Bittergourd and pork soup

The food didn’t disappoint – we ordered the famous bittergourd soup, chicken with black bean sauce and bittergourd slices and pork belly with yam. I liked the soup as it was adequately porky without being overly rich, while the bittergourd slices were crunchy and not at all bitter. You can opt for just the meat which rif and I did, or have the full works of pork slices and spare parts.

Chicken with bittergourd and black beans

I also liked the chicken with black bean sauce as the gravy was thick and savoury, with a bit of bite from the bittergourd slices. This went well with rice. The pork belly with yam was a favourite of rif and justly so. This was well prepared so the yam slices were soft and the pork, meltingly tender.

Good stuff

Our bill came up to less than RM50 for the above and I found it reasonable considering the portion and food quality. I’ll be back for more, that’s for sure!
