I heard about WOP Pizzeria in Plaza Damas from my good friend, who suggested I give the place a try since I’m always game for a good wood-fire pizza. Since Jien is an even bigger fan of pizzas, we went there for lunch the next day itself.
We arrived at WOP Pizzeria slightly before the lunch crowd kicked in, placed our orders for three pizzas (Margherita, Spicy Shrimp Garlic and Portobello with Truffle Oil) and watched the entire process from the pizza counter. There are also tables upstairs to cater to larger groups but since it was just Jien and myself, the counter seats worked fine.
WOP Pizzeria uses sourdough for their pizzas, prepped to order and finished off in a Gianni Acunto wood-fire oven with mangrove wood to enhance the flavour of the dough. Expect to find Naples-style pizza here – thicker crust but thin in the middle. San Marzano tomatoes are used, which is lighter in flavour compared to other tomato bases.
The Margherita (RM34) was first to arrive; San Marzano, mozzarella, Parmiggiano Reggiano and fresh basil. At first bite, you taste the sweet tang from the tomato base, then the dough hits you. Chewy and crispy with almost-black patches on the crust from the mangrove wood fire.
We moved on to the Portobello with Truffle Oil (RM42) – mushroom slices with mozzarella and truffle olive oil on top. WOP is generous with their truffle olive oil so there’s plenty of truffle-like aroma in each bite. I’m not sure if my elitist foodie friends would be convinced with “truffle odorant” but I certainly don’t mind. 🙂
The Spicy Shrimp Garlic (RM47) is great for experimenters who like challenging the norm. I can’t decide which I prefer better between this and the truffle oil pizza, but Jien likes this best. Crunchy shrimp that packs plenty of “oomph”, this pizza has the most character of the three we ordered. I feel they could cut back slightly on the sodium level of the shrimp, but aside from that, all good.
Overall, I like the pizza crust at WOP Pizzeria. It’s the dough and the oven that I find a highlight here, but the ingredients used could be kicked up a few notches to level with the artisanal touches of the dough. Still, plenty of potential and I would come back whenever the pizza craving kicks in.

Verdict: Good pizza dough but I feel ingredients could be kicked up a notch. Try the spicy shrimp garlic and portobello mushroom pizza.
