I meant to visit FY Lunch & Break in OUG sometime in March after seeing a random post about their “Sarawak Laksa fried rice” while browsing my Instagram feed. That visit was put on hold as our government instructed the country to go on MCO, so my visit to FY Lunch & Break happened 7 months later; last weekend.
We picked a not-so-good time to head to the restaurant – it was Saturday morning when OUG is congested and parking spots were like finding a needle in a haystack. I reckon it’s best to go when there’s no morning market in motion, so you wouldn’t have to make multiple rounds or pray to the parking god for an available spot.
Naturally, I ordered what is recommended on the menu; Sarawak Laksa, Sarawak Kolo Mee, Sarawak Tomato Stir-Fried Kuay Teow, Stir-Fried Manicai with Egg and Laksa Fried Rice. Since the fried rice was what caught my fancy in the first place.
The Sarawak Laksa (RM9.90 – small, RM11.90 – large) was first to arrive – with the standard garnish of prawns, shredded chicken and omelet. Tastewise, I found the broth milder than Aunty Lan’s but overall, quite balanced and pleasant to eat. If you’re looking for a lighter-spiced Sarawak Laksa, this is up your alley.
For those wanting a bit of kick and grit, you’ll probably find FY Lunch & Break’s version a tad mild. The sambal on the side isn’t as oomph in my opinion, so you’ll need to add more if you want that spicy kick.
I wasn’t expecting much in the Tomato Stir-Fried Kuay Teow (RM8.50 – small, RM9.50 – large) – it looked a lot like wat tan hor, but instead of egg gravy, it comes with tomato gravy with shreds of chicken, prawns, fish cake and vege. At first bite, you get that sweet flavour from the tomato before the savoury note kicks in, and hints of tang at the end.
Quite pleasant I must say, and despite my first time trying this, I reckon it will be a dish I would order again and again since each bite grows on you. The kuay teow could use a bit of “wok hei”, though I don’t know if charring the kuay teow is common in Sarawak. I’ll have to try this in Sarawak to compare objectively.
The Manicai Egg (RM8) is delicious. I’ve only eaten manicai (sweet leaf) in pan mee, so having it stir-fried with egg is a nice change. You get that sweet, peppery flavour from the manicai and the egg gives it a fluffy texture and “body”. I’m ordering this again, for sure.
FY Lunch & Break’s Sarawak Kolo Mee (RM7.50 – small, RM8.50 – large) comes with a good amount of lard oil so despite it’s dry appearance, there’s plenty of flavour and aroma. That said, I thought the noodles were overcooked as they were lacking that springy bite and the minced pork was scant.
While the Laksa Fried Rice (RM9) was what I came to FY Lunch & Break for, it was my least favourite of the items I ordered. The rice was hard and dry, so the laksa flavour didn’t quite come across nicely. It tasted like stale rice, but served hot. Jien found this tasty, so if you too, might disagree with me on this. According to him, it was fragrant and well-spiced.
Overall, I find the food quite decent. While the Laksa Fried Rice and Sarawak Laksa didn’t rock my boat, I’ll come back for the Manicai Egg and Tomato Kuay Teow.

Verdict: I like the manicai egg and tomato noodles. The Sarawak Laksa is a tad mild for my liking.
