2017 Mid-Autumn Festival Mooncakes

by Bangsar Babe

When I was a kid, Mid-Autumn Festival meant bringing out my lantern to play. Mum got me the chicken while my brother got the dragon and my sister, a fish. As a grown-up, this festival means having lots of mooncakes to eat and given how much we enjoy this occasion, top hotels and restaurants in KL showcase their creativity in mooncake box packaging as well as flavours every year. Here are some of the options for mooncakes this year – they make great gifts for friends and loved ones!

The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur

This year, The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur team goes big – and I mean size. Their Super Mooncake (6.5” Prosperity Mooncake) comes with eight (8) golden yolks and easily feeds 10-12 adults. Every bit of mooncake you cut into has a segment of yolk, so that’s definitely a highlight if you’re a salted egg yolk fan. Packaging is really nice too; elegant yet understated – very in-line with the St. Regis brand.

A box of four classic mooncakes cost RM140++ while the super mooncake with eight egg yolks cost RM200++ per piece. For orders, please contact 03-2727 6699, click here to download order form or email di****************@st*****.com.

Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur

Durian mooncake (RM34.50) is an all-time favourite at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur. It is said to be one of the best in town and according to my other half who’s big on durian mooncakes, this is the best he’s eaten this year and in the past years. I personally prefer their chocolate mooncakes made of chocolate ganache in three different flavours – Manjari dark chocolate with raspberry jelly, caramelised white chocolate and Gianduja hazelnut chocolate with oolong tea (RM47 each).

To place an order, contact 03-2179 8885 or email your order list to mo***********@mo**.com. More information about the mooncakes here.

Intercontinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur

This year, Tao Chinese Cuisine of Intercontinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur offers six eclectic selections of baked skin mooncakes and four snowskin offerings – handmade individually by Chef Lo Tian Sion. Popular flavours include their pure durian snowskin mooncake with salted caramel chocolate centre (RM42 per piece) and marble snow skin with pandan paste and single egg yolk (RM28 per piece).

Dorsett Grand Subang also has three new baked mooncake flavours – Six Coarse Grains Paste, Coconut Pandan Paste with Single Yolk and Green Tea Paste with Single Yolk, on top of their traditional mooncake selection.

Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur

Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur had me at Ferrero Rocher Mooncake. Their signature mooncake this year combines the taste pleasures of hazelnut and chocolate for a rich, nutty flavour. The mooncake exterior is topped with edible gold dust to complete the experience. Classic options include the Single Yolk White Lotus Paste, Pure White Lotus Paste and Red Bean Paste, and all mooncakes are priced between RM34 nett and RM38 nett per piece.

The mooncakes come in an Oriental-themed dual-coloured gift box and I found the box simple yet elegant. To place an order, call 03-2117 4888 or email en**********@mi**************.com.

Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Mini Golden Ping Pei Musang King Durian

Also going with the Oriental theme is Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur where the mooncakes are housed in an elegant carrier box.
