Michelangelo’s Pizzeria, Ipoh

Michelangelo’s Pizzeria in Ipoh evokes a family, trattoria-like vibe – the place is small but cosy and décor is no-frills but welcoming. It was my first time dining here and I found the experience to be quite pleasant.

Wood-fire oven

The pizzeria opens at 6pm and packs up within half an hour. We were there slightly before 6pm and already, a long queue had formed. As the restaurant isn’t very large, tables are placed rather close to one another but no one seemed to mind. They were there mainly for Michelangelo’s pizza, made using a wood-fire oven.

Bacon-Blue and Bacon & Egg

We tried a whole pizza done half and half – one part was Bacon Blue (RM42.10 for a full portion) while the other half was Bacon & Eggs (RM36.50 for a full portion). The former comprise thick cut bacon with rich blue cheese and cherry tomatoes for a bit of tangy accent.

Good crust

I liked this combination as there was a good zing from the sauce and tomatoes, while the blue cheese gave the pizza a rich flavour and pungent aroma. If you’re a fan of blue cheese, you’ll love this. Bacon & Eggs comes with smoked streaky bacon and egg, topped with cheddar cheese and further seasoned with salt and pepper. Decent, but the Bacon Blue still triumphs.

Bacon & Egg

Portions are generous here so a whole pizza feeds 2-3 pax easily. As the pizzas are made using a wood-fire oven, the crust is crisp with a smoky aroma and light texture.

Carbonara

If you want pasta, try Michelangelo’s Carbonara (RM25.90), made using cream sauce and chunky bacon bits. I didn’t think the sauce was much to shout about, but the pasta was well-cooked and firm to the bite. That made a lot of difference as many places tend to overcook their pasta so you get a soggy mess.

Insane Brownie

I thought the brownies (RM11) was pretty good as it came with sea salt caramel and warm chocolate. You can opt to have this warm or cold, but I recommend going for warm brownies as you get that rich, gooey deliciousness.

Casual setup

On the whole, I like Michelangelo’s Pizzeria. Service is quick and friendly, and the owner himself would go from table to table to see if everything is alright. The place packs up very quickly so you might have to wait a little for a table. Definitely a place I would revisit if I’m in Ipoh. 🙂
