I never quite saw the fuss of football or any kind of team sports for that matter. However, when I was in Primary & Secondary School I attempted to be interested in football for a period, just to see what the fuss was all about. Truly, I never quite understood what was so awesome about a bunch of guys chasing a ball across a field or why people would get so upset & passionate about it. I did however see what was awesome about a bunch of good looking & fashionable guys. 🙂
With football season starting this month (first match kicks off August 8th!), I dedicated this post to the footballers that not only look good on the field but also take their good looks, charm & style to a whole other level once off duty.
In no apparent order, here are my picks for this year’s most stylish footballers (Photo credits: Google):
#5 Sergio Ramos
Left: A crisp white tee, casual rolled up denim jeans & light blue shoes are a quick way to look put together in a flash.
Right: Work shoes & jeans can be a tricky combination to put together, ensure that your shoes are not too long for the width of your jeans, throw on a Moto jacket over a plain tee & you’re good to go.
Why it works: Already a tall good-looking chap, he doesn’t need much to get his style game on. There’s much to love about his clean & simple look, never going over the top with accessories, bags or shoes. Whether in a tailored suit or a casual oversized hoodie, he rocks it with an effortless style that’s easy to follow.
Left: On lazy days, there’s always a pair of cargo pants & comfy hoodie to keep you looking decent while out in town.Right: For relaxed formal attire, a sweater worn over a button down shirt looks put together & not too stuffy. Perfect for date nights or dinner parties.
#4 Cristiano Ronaldo
Left: Do not be afraid to add some accessories to your plain tee & jeans combo, it helps to give your entire look a bit more character & personality.
Right: A well fitted coat in a bold shade of aubergine with black lapels add a touch of class & polish to a white tee & dark denim combo.
Why it works: Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t one to shy away from accessories. He can be seen working an outfit using bracelets, handbags (or a manbag), bold belts & unique shoes. While not every look is a hit, we have to give him props for his bravery in pushing the fashion boundaries and styling himself up the way he sees fit.
Left: Colour staples of brown or khaki looks good with grey-blue slacks with a blue shirt underneath. If the weather is chilly, don’t be afraid to throw on a scarf.
Right: Bad hair day? No worries! Rock your snapback hats with a fitted short sleeve button down shirt & slacks for a more adult & less skater boy vibe.
#3 Keisuke Honda
Left: You simply can’t go wrong with a pop of red in your black & white attire. Throw on a red vest if you’re not ready to rock a full on red jacket.
Right: This double-breasted coat is divine. Keep your neck warm with a marle grey scarf for a dark monochrome attire. This is airport fashion done well.
Why it works: Keisuke’s magnificent use of coats is a work of wonder! From the bold navy camouflage printed suit jacket to the sleek black double breasted coat. He’s a definite style icon to look up to! He keeps his lines clean with pops of colour, bold prints & carefully selected outerwear.
Left: An all white suit is hard to pull off and harder to keep clean, however we can’t help but appreciate the way Keisuke ties up his all white suit with a light grey shirt & pocket square for a hint of colour.
Right: Army or camouflage prints are not just for those who are in the army. Opt for a more toned down shade of navy to quickly update your otherwise plain suit.
#2 Xabi Alonso
Left: Layering done right for a casual day out. Xabi shows us that it’s okay to be wearing 2 extra shirts under your jacket if you’re feeling chilly. Be sure the colours of your shirt offer a little contrast to keep your look fresh & interesting.
Right: There’s no reason to walk your dog in just t-shirt & shorts. With a crisp button down & faded denim jeans, you can go from walking your dog to grabbing a quick pint with your mates in a jiff.
Why it works: Xabi is definitely one of the safest dressers in this mix. He keeps things simple and unfussy with a relaxed pair of jeans & button down shirt. For a more preppy or formal occasion he plays it safe with a light grey suit and a pair of deep brown shoes & matching tie to add a touch of colour.
Left: The classic combination of white button down shirt & dark wash denim. You could choose to pair it up with a dark pair of shoes, or do what Xabi did and add a bit of brightness to your look with white sneakers.
Right: Marle grey is known as the ultimate neutral shade, be sure to amp up your suit with a hint of brown to add a little warmth to your look.
#1 Raul Meireles
Left: Raul shows us that trench coats & leather pants are still all the rage. He rocks it well with a clean white long shirt & bold turquoise kicks.
Right: Despite keeping his tattoos well hidden under this studded jacket, make no mistake that Raul still loves his prints & totally keeps his edgy vibe with this ultimate all over studded jacket.
Why it works: His tattoos are a fashion piece all on their own. Known for his edgy and bold style, Raul isn’t one to shy away from colour or extravagant prints. Rarely seen without his partner Ivone, the two of them are a powerhouse fashion couple. Seen together rocking their tattoos in full display, they are a fashion force not to be reckoned with. Whether in neon, studs or all over plaid, he takes each outfit and makes them uniquely his own.
Left: Because matching your shoes to your suit is just too mainstream. Raul rocked his grey suit with a skinny black tie & blinding neon green shoes.
Right: A snapback cap & suit? No one does it better than Raul! In a bold gingham all over suit he keeps the rest of his look neat with all white shoes & shirt.
Though retired, we couldn’t help but include these 2 footballers in the mix:
Left: The leather jacket is known as a closet staple and David shows us exactly why. It instantly transforms his otherwise casual t-shirt & jeans look to something a little dressier.
Right: A denim shirt can look too casual. To dress it up, be sure to button it all the way to the collar & don’t forget the cuffs to tie it all in.
You can’t have a stylish footballer article without featuring David Beckham! He may have had a few questionable fashion pieces in the past, but as they say the past is in the past and pretty much every single piece he’s rocking these days have been on point! Whether he’s got on a Brooklyn street vibe with a leather jacket, or a sleek suit for the red carpet or just everyday casual with a button down & slacks, you know he’s nailing every look.
Left: There’s nothing wrong with adding a little bit of texture to your look. On a cold day, a quilted vest not only looks good but helps to keep your body warm. It’s a double duty fashion piece!
Right: While you’re not supposed to be playing football in a suit. David does it effortlessly and still looks incredibly sharp in his well-tailored black & white suit with a navy blue tie.
Left: This looks needs no description. Hidetoshi nails it perfectly with a burgundy bowtie & checkered shirt paired up with shades of earthy brown. Just reminds us of the stylish Matt Smith as Dr. Who.
Right: Keep your scarf tucked into your jacket for added warmth and to keep it at bay. An embellished well worn brown jacket is an updated take on the black leather jacket staple.
With a slightly preppy vibe, Hidetoshi Nakata takes over the fashion world with his stylish use of scarves & accessories. He shows us it’s okay to be wearing a fully button up shirt with a burgundy bowtie and a suede jacket casually thrown over the shoulders. How you should not be afraid of colours by pairing up a deep wine-burgundy coat with a rich forest green turtleneck.
Left: Shades of black, white & navy are safe to have for your suits. However, if you love colour, do not be afraid to mix it up with colours of wine & forest for a sleek fashion forward vibe.
Right: You can do so much with a white tee & jeans base. Hidetoshi threw on a vest, scarf with an added jacket around his hips, a great way to layer your outfit if you’re somewhere with temperamental weather.
