ROCKU Yakiniku in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur is anything but traditional – offering a new concept of Yakiniku (Japanese style BBQ) in an upbeat, pop culture environment. rif and I dined there when they first opened a few months back along with a few of our close friends. The dinner buffet is priced at RM49.90++ per pax where you get to tuck into grilled meats, seafood and hot food items within 100 minutes/1hr 40mins.
I’m not sure how things are at the moment, but they had some issues with managing the dinner crowd when I was there during the initial stages. Helped myself to the items at the hot food counter but I suggest you keep your stomach space for the assorted meats and seafood.
The fun part about Yakiniku is watching thin slices of meat quickly turning crisp as they are placed on the grill – you get to be a short-order cook for the night. The meats comprise pork belly, pork loin, chicken, beef ribeye, chuck tender and short rib, while seafood variety includes salmon, squid rings, mussels, scallops, prawns and butterfish.
During my visit, the seafood wasn’t very fresh especially the prawns. The only thing decent was the butterfish, which wasn’t as strong smelling compared to the rest. Go for the pork belly and ribeye for these are the tastiest when grilled. They taste best when dipped into dipping sauces – ponzu, spicy miso and chilli. I liked the ponzu best.
On the whole, I had an alright experience at Rocku; granted service was slow and they took a while to replenish the food items and change the grill. The one thing I couldn’t tolerate that night was the live band which really wasn’t very good and didn’t do much for entertainment.
Food: 6/10 (non halal)
Verdict: The selection isn’t extensive but it’s still decent value for money. Go for the ribeye and pork belly.
