Home Food Reviews Gerai Makanan Japanese BBQ

rif and I are always on the lookout for casual eating places, especially ones like Gerai Makanan Japanese BBQ in Taman Desa. Places like this tend to offer reasonably priced food (or so we thought) and I love being able to dress down when I eat out. Dressing down would be a wise choice when you’re eating here, unless you want to redesign your best outfit with oil or meat spatters.

Gerai Makanan Japanese BBQ takes on a DIY concept, where customers cook their own food over a charcoal grill. Barbecuing is one of rif’s favourite things to do (at least I assume so) so he did most of the grilling for me. While I sat and ate. :D

Short rib

To be honest, I didn’t find the food that great. Sure, it was a different experience and prices are mostly below RM10. But portions were ridiculously small, so we had to order more. The three of us had to order six plates of pork belly (RM10 for 5-6 thin slices) to feel satisfied. On top of that, we also ordered beef ribeye (RM10), short rib (RM15), brisket (RM10), steak (RM25) and pork shoulder (RM10).

Grilled pork belly

You can also choose to dip the cooked meats into the sauce provided, but I ate them without. The pork belly was good, but nothing spectacular. Seasoning was minimal, to allow the flavour of the fat to stand out. I didn’t care much for the beef dishes, for the meats weren’t tender or flavourful enough.

We washed down the food with a Sapporo Beer (RM13) each, and the total damage was RM210 for the above. And we left the place still feeling hungry, so another round of pan mee followed suit.

Ambiance: 5/10
Price: 4/10
Food: 5/10 (non halal)
Verdict: I found the food just alright, but if you’re into DIY meals, give this a try. Remember to bring extra cash, as the food isn’t cheap.

Hahaha I’m normally full after a Genghis Kahn and 2 steaks maybe? Sometimes the DIY cooking can be a hassle with that big stone pot in the middle…
