Home Food Reviews Peruvian Gastronomic Week

I received an invitation to a Peruvian dinner at The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur, in conjunction with The Peruvian Gastronomic Week. It was my first time trying Peruvian food, so I’ll be sharing what I thought of the food from a first-timer’s perspective.

Now that I’m no longer based in KL, getting into KL after work hours is hellish, especially when it rains. So I drove home, got a lift to the LRT station, stopped at KLCC and walked to the hotel. By the time I got to Cesar’s, people had started eating and the once beautifully arranged food spread wasn’t as neat looking anymore.

Ceviche

Ceviche? Looks foreign, but yes please. And oh dear lord it was good. So good that I had not two, not three, but four servings of this. I think I shocked the chef. This piquant dish of raw fish, ‘cooked’ with lime juice and spiced with chilli peppers was lovely. I loved the tangy, spicy, sweet, salty and peppery flavours – like a burst of sensations in my mouth.

Besides the traditional ceviche, I also enjoyed the tuna and salmon ceviche. These were less robust in flavour, but with a creamier texture. The mash potato and yellow chilli stuffed with chicken salad made a delicious appetizer. As were the potatos with huancaina sauce.

Seafood and sundried chilli soup

I also have to rave about the seafood and sundried chilli soup. Who would have thought something that simple would pack so much flavour? One sip and I was head over heels in love. Packed with seafood flavour and the sweet aroma of chilli, the broth was perfect on that rainy night.

Peruvian Duck Northen Paella was also delicious, especially if you eat the thigh or drumstick. rif really enjoyed this, and went back for seconds and thirds. I was still hung up on my ceviche. The seafood and potato stew had a nutty aftertaste – similar to our local satay sauce, but a lot milder.

Desserts were good too. I nibbled bits of each from rif, because I was still working on my fourth serving of ceviche and third bowl of seafood soup. Much to the amusement of Executive Chef Rafael Lopez-Aliaga and his team, from JW Marriott Hotel in Lima.

If you must know, I smelt like ceviche the whole night. rif didn’t even want to kiss me goodnight. But I didn’t mind. Because I had ceviche.
