Breakfast at Cameron Highlands Resort

IMG_3737 copy

Breakfast at Cameron Highlands Resort was served at The Dining Room, overlooking the golf course and surrounding hills. We got a selection of cut fruits, pastries, cereal, yogurt and hot items such as eggs, waffles, pancakes and local specialties which you can order from the menu.

rif and I really enjoyed the quiet time together, coupled with the attentive service and hearty food. Juices are freshly squeezed here and the assorted pastries keep you busy while waiting for your hot dish to arrive.

Eggs Benedict

I enjoyed my eggs Benedict with bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes and hash brown. rif had a similar serving, but with an omelette. The buttermilk pancakes with apple compote and pineapple fritters came with double cream and honeycomb nougat. This was adequately fluffy and lovely with the compote.

The waffles came with banana butterscotch, strawberry compote and crusted mango tempura. While it was interesting, I didn’t quite like the combination. rif however, thought otherwise. If you can’t live without something Malaysian, they have local noodles like fried meehoon too.

Breakfast is included in the hotel room package, but if you’re a walk-in customer, it’s RM70++ per person. Fairly reasonable considering the selection and quality. My weekend at Cameron Highlands Resort was an enjoyable one.

From the comfortable room, jungle trail, steamboat dinner, lunch and afternoon tea, spa session and hearty breakfast, I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. I would like to thank the PR Team of YTL Hotels, for this generous offer.

Gonbei, Cameron Highlands Resort

IMG_3691 copy

Open dining concept

Gonbei is the only Japanese restaurant in Cameron Highlands and is a sister location to the Gonbei in Starhill Gallery. This restaurant boasts an open dining concept, making it ideal for steamboats. Incidentally, that was what rif and I had that night – shabu shabu.

Priced at RM110++ per person, it is a bit steep, but you get better quality and overall freshness of the meats, seafood and vegetables. The sashimi from the buffet bar was prepared in small batches, so the salmon and tuna slices were fresh and succulent.

Lamb slices

IMG_3711 copy

Unlike many shabu shabu places in KL, Gonbei’s broth is clear and tasty, with little or no MSG. I guess that explains the price tag. I didn’t feel thirsty at all after the meal, even after four soup refills. The vegetables were fresh and lent a sweet flavour the broth.

Beef slices

I especially enjoyed the thinly sliced lamb as it gave the broth a deep flavour. Skip the chicken, as it was tasteless.

Mmmm…goodness in a bowl!

You can also choose to have sukiyaki or teppanyaki for the same price, but feel shabu shabu goes best with the chilly weather. The fried garlic with oil and special chilli sauce deserves a mention – they packed quite a punch and went well with the meats.

Remember to leave some stomach space for the large strawberries. I helped myself to plenty. They tasted heavenly with custard sauce, mixed with assorted nuts. So good I tell youuuuu!!

Luscious strawberries

To date, this is by far my best steamboat experience. The food wasn’t particularly fantastic, but the combination of cold weather, good soup base and fresh ingredients makes a whole lot of difference.

Ambiance: 8/10

Jim Thompson Tea Room

IMG_3500 copy

Jim Thompson Tea Room is not just elegant looking; the classy ambiance makes it a cosy retreat for quiet lunches and afternoon tea. rif and I dined there for lunch upon arriving at the hotel and we had a wonderful meal of salmon gravlax, lobster bisque, wagyu beef burger and king crab carbonara.

IMG_3508 copy

Home Cured Salmon Gravlax

The Home Cured Salmon Gravlax (RM45) boasted a bright orange hue and meltingly tender texture. It was very good – smoky and slightly herbal – with a tangy finish from the honey mustard dressing. Also noteworthy was the Lobster Bisque (RM30), packed with flavour, unctuous and incredibly fragrant from the seafood.

If I could only have one dish here, I would pick the King Crab Linguine Carbonara (RM55). The pasta, cooked al dente, came brimming with meaty chunks of king crab and was as satisfying as I could ask for. I especially loved the slightly melted aged Brie, which lent a earthy-pungent flavour to the sauce.

My Classic American Wagyu Burger (RM55) was a composition of 250gm wagyu beef patty, cheese, pineapple fritters and lightly grilled burger bun. This came with a side of cheesy fried, highland chutney and homemade slaw.

Ask for the patty to be cooked medium rare. It tastes best that way. I found the patty nicely seasoned and still retained its beefy flavour. Portion is large enough to feed two moderate eaters, but if you’re really hungry, tackle this alone.

Kahlua Caramel Tiramisu

Dessert was an interesting take on tiramisu, maybe a deconstructed one. This Kahlua Caramel Tiramisu (RM30) was served on a long plate in three parts. Pretty yummy, but I liked the fun factor of it better.

English Afternoon Tea

IMG_3834 copy

Would you like a cup of tea?

IMG_3821 copy

If you’re ever in Cameron Highlands or staying at the Cameron Highlands Resort, an afternoon tea at Jim Thompson Tea Room is a must. Priced at RM60 for two, the English afternoon tea comes in a three-tiered tray of sandwiches – tuna, eggs and cress, smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber, English scones, cakes and pastries and strawberries with chocolate sauce.

The afternoon tea comes with two choices of tea – I had the lemon tea while rif ordered the chamomile tea. Among the assortment of cakes, I liked the chocolate mousse best, followed by the chocolate layered cake. The strawberries were lovely when dipped in chocolate sauce, and even better with clotted cream.

Freshly baked scones

Devon clotted cream

But the highlight of the afternoon tea was undoubtedly the English scones, served with Devon clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam. These were richly buttery, fluffy and soft – delicious when eaten with generous lashings of cream and jam.
