Home Food Reviews Forty Licks Ice Cream

The world is a dark and miserable place without ice cream. Ice cream has played a major role in determining how my mood (swings) will be. With ice cream, I’m a lot calmer. But good ice cream can turn my mood around, even if it’s for a short while. I’m one of those people who get annoyed and secretly curse an ice cream parlour if the ice cream flavour I want isn’t available.

How it all started: Salted Caramel

And often, I can’t find salted caramel ice cream. Even if I do, it is usually horrible tasting. Good salted caramel ice cream should be rich and round with a deep, lingering taste and savoury touch. I found a good version in the form of Forty Licks, a homemade ice cream business by Tat Wei.

The ice cream can last up to a month in the freezer as no preservatives are added. Among the six flavours I sampled (salted caramel, Thai tea, milk chocolate with peanut butter, dark chocolate, roasted white chocolate and green tea), the milk chocolate with peanut butter was my favourite. This tasted like an ice cream version of Reese peanut butter cups – creamy, smooth and sweet with chunks of peanut butter in every bite.

The dark chocolate was another favourite of mine as the ice cream was rich in chocolate flavour with a good balance sweetness. If you like tea or tea-flavoured food, the Thai Tea is your flavour. I enjoyed it, but it isn’t a flavour I would want to get if I plan to soothe my sorrows.

The roasted white chocolate had an interesting aftertaste. It reminded rif of Horlicks but I likened it to be more hazelnut-ty. Like the salted caramel, it melts pretty fast because of the ingredients. So stop chitty chatty and eat up!

Green Tea didn’t really leave an impression on us. We both thought it lacked the strong green tea note which you get from matcha ice cream. That said, some people don’t like strong green tea flavours so to each his own.

You can order the 6-sampler pack for RM40, or get a full pint (RM25 – normal, RM30 – premium) if you know what flavour you like. Me? I’m definitely getting a whole pint of milk chocolate with peanut butter and dark chocolate. :D
