Which is your favourite? Soup or dry?

Those living in/near Kota Damansara need not travel far for their bak kut teh fix anymore, for there is now a branch of Wing Heong Bak Kut Teh in Dataran Sunway. Located next to Super Kitchen Chili Pan Mee, Wing Heong Bak Kut Teh originated from Klang in the 1990s, and it’s latest outlet is spacious, brightly lit, air-conditioned and clean – I’m most pleased with the last two factors.

Dry Bak Kut Teh

The dry bak kut teh (RM13 per pax) was aromatic and beautifully caramelized with a savoury-pungent touch from the dried cuttlefish. I found the flavour for Wing Heong’s version almost comparable to the one I had at Yap Chuan in Puchong.

Porky and tasty

The meat used at Wing Heong was of a better cut, beautifully tender and nicely fatty. For maximum satisfaction, top the oil rice (Wing Heong only serves oil rice) with drizzles of dark soy sauce and dig in! rif and I even scrapped the sticky bits of gravy and cuttlefish from the bottom of the claypot.

Soup Bak Kut Teh

Wing Heong’s soup bak kut teh (RM13 per pax) was adequately thick with a pronounced herbal flavour, but I found it slightly on the sweet side. You get to choose the type of meats you like, so I asked for pork ribs and belly. The slight thickness of the broth gave ‘body’ to the oil rice, making each mouthful more satisfying. I couldn’t stop drinking the soup, and they are pretty generous with the refill, unlike some BKT places I know.

Chopped garlic and cili padi for more ‘oomph’!

Yau Char Kwai

Unfortunately, the yau char kwai (RM1.50) was tough and tasted of old oil; it dampened my experience a little. It didn’t soak up the broth as well.

Steamed Fish with Spicy Bean Sauce

I rather enjoyed the steamed fish with spicy bean sauce (RM18.90 – small), served on a metal dish with a burner to keep it warm. The fish was fresh with no muddy smell or taste, while the gravy was tangy-sweet with a mild spiciness from the pounded chillies. I would have preferred more gravy with the fish, as it dried up after 10 minutes or so.

The herbal tea here deserves a mention – ‘kau’ and not overly sweet, just the way I like it. The restaurant is fully air-conditioned and portions are generous. For the price and convenience (there’s also a branch in Damansara Jaya), I wouldn’t mind popping by whenever the bak kut teh craving hits.
