Home Food Reviews The gynecologist

Every girl has a gynecologist. At least every girl I know has a gynecologist that they visit every once a year, or for those paranoid ones, twice a year. I’ve always dreaded gynae visits, as they are always awkward and uncomfortable.

But I don’t think anyone can top my gynae story this time around and I’ll tell you why. I called to make an appointment for a pap smear and was at the clinic by 6.30pm.

Little did I know, my gynae (a man) is a blog reader and a fan of my former Star columns. OMGWTF…!!!! Imagine the awkwardness. I didn’t know this until I was on the patient bed undergoing my check-up. Here’s an account of what happened.

“Spread your legs please.”

“By the way Miss Tiong, I’m a HUGE fan of your blog. I read it at least twice a week and why did you stop writing for The Star? “

He said those things WHILE he was performing the checkup. I almost wanted to put on my underwear and make a run for the door. Talk about embarrassment! I didn’t know what to reply and he kept going on and on and on…

The oyster mee place in Penang…really nice ah?”

“Where was your most recent discovery? Any tips”

“I’m planning to take some friends for good seafood. Can you recommend a good restaurant?”

Dude…you’re inspecting my poo-naa-nee!!! Why must you ask me such questions lah??! My cheeks were hot from embarrassment and I don’t think I can ever go back to him for my regular check-ups. The whole ordeal was worse than falling flat on the floor in my high heels, having a wardrobe malfunction or accidentally farting in a lift full of people.

I paid my RM300 and left, vowing never to go back. Anyone wants to recommend me a gynae? Preferable a lady and one who doesn’t read my blog please??

LOL! Understand your feeling. Indeed quite embarrassing. Guess at that moment I would feel like ‘quick get it done. and I’m gonna leave this place!’. I too will prefer a woman gynae. Good luck to you. Looking for a woman gynae is not difficult..but not your reader might be a tough one ^_^

The high price of being a very popular blogger it seems…! I’m sure the Gynae now knows you’re extremely embarassed, since he is an avid reader of your blog.

I believe you’re based in KL? Then I don’t know who to refer you to. But if you’re ever in Seremban, a great Gynae is Dr Norintan in Columbia Asia Hospital Seremban.

Hahahhaa…. Well I am pretty sure that he doesn’t intend to offend you. I work with many surgeons and doctors, they are after all quite sociable. Something they are so get used to the procedures and didn’t realise that you might be embarrassed if he talks to you.

A good doctor will try to find a common topic to talk to you, especially useful esp when doing stitches on patients. (example) They try to distract you with conversations so that the patient less focus on the embarrassing moment OR less focus on the pain.

Anyhow, I am proud of you being responsible to your well being and go for regular check up with your gynecologist. :)

That’s the price one has to pay for being a famous blogger, Sue Lynn. Privacy will shoot straight out the door when fame comes. =(

I guess the doctor was trying to distract you or kill the time away, but he definitely failed to notice that you blushed deep red. My personal opinion is that he should have waited before or until after the examination before he splattered those words out.

The female gynecologists at Sime Darby Medical Center and Sunway Medical should be experienced and good at their job, but give them a try; not too sure if they are fans of your blog, though.

Dr. Jean Woo is very fully booked. Just saw her for the first time last month. Too busy and very hard to get hold of her. Also, the front desk chinese lady, Elena or so… also very hard to make appointment through her… so… I would give up seeing famous gynae, would rather look for one who is more caring and can spend more time on explanation during consultation.

Reply
Kash July 25, 2012 - 4:08 pm

The consultant should have been more professional, while doing the test to you. Common sense prevails all the time, but not in this case. I don’t think he meant any embarrassment for you, but still the topic could have waited until everything was done.

It might not be him acting unprofessionally. Young lady patients tend to get rather nervous and get all tensed up during pap smear. An experienced physician will normally try to engage in relaxing conversation with his or her patient to calm their nerves.

Why are your choosing a male gynae in the first place? Wonder why is this profession regulated in Malaysia. Don’t mean discriminate the male gynae but how can we assured there’s no wild fantasy going into his head? You are paying to bear it all to a strager guy! Don’t your other half mind the intimacy going on?? Women out there can protect themselves by asking for a female gynae from now onwards. For the sake of women and your husband.

Bangsar Babe March 1, 2013 - 12:14 am

I don’t get the issue you have with male gynaes. Some of them are good at what they do and if you think “intimacy” involves a speculum, that’s debatable. But each of us are entitled to their own opinion. Thanks for voicing yours out. :)

Well, I agree that its personal preferance on choosing the gynae we are confortable with. I used to have my gynae check with a lady doctor in SJMC (don’t want to mention the name) but was not confortable with her even if she is a female. The explanation is short and not very friendly. So, I decided to change my gynae last year to Klinik Wanita Metro in Subang Jaya…another female gynae. Felt very confortable with her. Good explanation and very gentle. Pricing were ok. Took my mom and sister here too. Overall, very happy with her service.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Was really busy in office with hundred one assignments. Well, the doctor’s name in Klinik Wanita Metro in Subang Jaya….Dr Suganthe ( hopefully the spelling is correct). I visited her 2 weeks ago…some problem with discharge….that’s why I can remember the name.
Anyways, the doc managed to relieve me from the stress I was going through for months. Thanks doc!

Just for your information, Dr Suganthe, is not a fully qualified gynaecologist but only has gynae experience from hospitals and clinics.
She does not possess specialist qualifications.

Krys April 29, 2013 - 6:57 pm

He is the best and very gentle gynae I have had ever met. I got a few bad experience with female gynae before I go for Dr. Guna, 8 yrs ago.. huhuh till today I still prefer him as my gynae. but really sorry for ur embarrassment feelings, hehe
Yes, I think he is a very comforting doctor just like what Pinky said ;)

Your post is really funny ! Me – I will never take a chance with a local gynecologist whom I might meet at some social function later on. So I took great pains to have my check-up done in Singapore. My family swears by Dr Lisa Wong from Mt Elizabeth Hospital on Orchard Road. Maybe famous Singaporeans come to KL to have theirs done ?? ; ) Now that is what I call bilateral trade ! LOL !

Please don’t even think about trusting chaudhury medical center.. My aunt had a miscarriage last year thanks to her arrogance and negligence.. She took her own sweet time to put on all the make up and inappropriate clothing she could and came only after two hours when it was an emergency.. My aunts baby was 8 months old and was a healthy one.. But my aunt had high BP and previously had a miscarriage due to it.. But this doctor .. She made my aunt take aspirins on a daily basis.. We still don’t know why she did that
I doubt aspirin is appropriate for pregnant women.. And she was afraid that my aunt would sue her for negligence that she had the cheek to visit my aunt after the miscarriage and told her not to try for kids anymore. The thing we notice about her is that she treats fair skinned And upper class patients better than the rest.. Well it’s best to go for any other gynecologist besides this chaudhury woman.. Better to be safe than sorry
