Ayam Penyet - smashed chicken

Despite having so many ayam penyet restaurants in Malaysia, I decided to check out Ayam Penyet Ria at Lucky Plaza in Singapore because Jeen mentioned they do a really good tahu telor. I’m not a huge fan of the chicken, but crisply fried egg and beancurd with rice sounded good…after 4 days of non-stop ramen and burgers.

Fried fritter bits

If I’m not mistaken, the ayam penyet set was SGD6.90 and comprised a quarter fried chicken with bits of fritters, beancurd, tempe and kangkung. The chicken – marinated with herbs and spices – was tender and adequately crispy. The sambal belacan packed a whole lot of kick. A little bit of this with rice was enough to make me turn red and sweat. I found this spicier than the ones in KL and couldn’t finish it.

Soda Gembira

My soda gembira came in handy, but didn’t do much to put out the fire in my mouth. That said, it had a good balance of syrup, condensed milk and ice cream soda. Quite refreshing.

Tahu Telor

Instead of the usual spicy kicap manis gravy, the tahu telor here comes with peanut gravy. I loved it! The batter was incredibly light, which complemented the egg and beancurd. This was almost like eating fried egg with satay sauce. This went well with rice.

While I didn’t care much for the ayam penyet (you can get it in Sunway & Shah Alam), I enjoyed the tahu telor. I don’t recall seeing this tahu in KL…but if you know of a place that serves the same thing, let me know!

Ambiance: 5.5/10
Price: 6/10
Food: 6/10
Verdict: If you’re in Singapore and was a spicy fix, give this a try!

this is leading me to wonder whether a poached egg with satay sauce might also be equally delicious! a change from the usual hollandaise sauce, heh :D

Random Comment of the Day: The Ayam Penyet Ria closest to the place I stay has a banner that proudly proclaims “Half Price after 10pm” right outside the entrance. Only thing is, by 9.15-9.30 they’re already closing up and putting chairs on tables and mopping floors and stuff =_=;;

Never bothered talking to the Manager or anyone about it cos, like you said, the chicken not great anyways.
