The Best and Worst of 2011

by Bangsar Babe

2011 has been quite a year for me. It started off pretty badly — there were plenty of uncertainties regarding my career direction and lady luck was never on my side. I kept missing opportunities despite working hard for them. It came to a point where I nearly wanted to give up and just bum around.

I kept knocking on doors, only to have them slam shut in my face. And I’ve lost count of how many doors I’ve knocked on. During the first half of the year, I wasn’t quite myself and was always feeling moody about things. I think this really took a toll in my relationship with Rif, as I wasn’t keen on opening up to him regarding issues I was facing. Rif kept telling me to persevere as he believes being hardworking has its rewards. It wasn’t until the middle of the year when things started picking up for me.

Brian from StarMetro called me to tell me I was promoted to Star2Sunday and I was going to write a bi-monthly food column for them. I got a fairly decent job with good working hours, allowing me to continue doing freelance work for other publications. On top of that, things started to improve in our relationship after Rif and I started the Marriage Preparation Course in June 2011. It was one of the best decisions we’ve made for our relationship.

My Chi Muis

I lost a few friends this year — friends I thought would stay by me through ups and downs. Those were very disappointing moments for me. While friends come and go, I never thought these few people would end up ‘going’. Good thing I still have a few close friends left and I hope these friendships would stand the test of time.

It’s been a pretty good second half and I’m quite sad that the year is coming to an end. I only hope that 2012 would be just as good as the second half of 2011, or better. That said, since this is still a food blog, I’m going to highlight the best and worst places I’ve visited this year.

I enjoy reading your column on good food and I have been to quite a few of the places you recommended and you were spot on. The attractions to your column is GOOD FOOD, not Bad Food. Hence, there is no need to write bad review. Like my daughter often said ” if you have nothing good to say, say Nothing”. Writing bad review can damage others business and some of these restaurants or hawkers are already struggling to make ends meet – don’t destroy their life!

Michael, the purpose of my blog is to share my food discoveries with everyone, both good and bad food. To me, I’d rather spare my readers the hassle of finding out about that bad food places themselves than to keep quiet. The attraction to my column is my honesty in reviewing and I never maliciously attack restaurants — I always try to give constructive criticisms.

Besides, I think a bit of negative comments can help these restaurants improve on their food, don’t you think?
